I was sure I had seen SHORT CIRCUIT somewhere along the way during my misguided youth. But as I watched this with my son today, I realized that I have never seen it front-to-back all the way through. There are actually a surprising number of 80s movies that I would say that I haven’t seen – technically – since I never sat down and watched them linearly. They are all movies that I know enough about to quote and reference as needed, but I’ve never just got through. Those would include NEVER-ENDING STORY and DARK CRYSTAL. But I’ll shut up before some of my childhood friends get too mad at me…

•June 12, 2015 • Leave a CommentThis is one of those movie I would have seen opening week when I was in my early 20s. Not that I am disinterested in it now, but I have less sense of urgency when it comes to big budget action sci-fi unless there is a real hook personally. I always knew I would watch PACIFIC RIM eventually, and I just hoped it would bring a bit of fun!
johnlink ranks THE BIG HEAT (1953)
•June 11, 2015 • Leave a CommentA film noir made in the early 50s by famed Director Fritz Lang, THE BIG HEAT is the sort of movie that I love to discover. One of my favorite genres, a director I admire, a plot which sounds promising, and an early Lee Marvin role. I’m in on that all day long.

•June 9, 2015 • 2 CommentsI’m not sure why, but I’ve been in the mood for stories about young people figuring out the world. Almost watched BREAKFAST CLUB or FAST TIMES, but decided instead to watch a movie from that genre that I had not seen: ADVENTURELAND. Heard it was funny and meant to see it when it came out. Can’t believe that was six years ago now.

•June 8, 2015 • Leave a CommentSeen my share of 90s action flicks, but I somehow never got around to this one. I think it was probably because of the generic VHS cover and the fact that even adolescent me didn’t think Charlie Sheen was much of an action hero. But this one hit HBO recently, so I figured I’d see if it had anything going for it.

johnlink ranks 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU (1999)
•June 5, 2015 • Leave a CommentMy wife and I were in need of a nostalgia fix, so we went with 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. As we start our early 30s, I suppose it is not yet weird to want watch a teen romance comedy, especially if it is a movie you remember from your own teenage days. So we watched this again, having no idea how well the last 16 years have aged the thing.

•June 1, 2015 • 2 CommentsDenzel Washington as an assassin-type trying to live out his life quietly before using his particular set of skills for another run? I’ll watch that movie all day long. Honestly, I knew nothing at all about this movie going in besides the fact that Denzel was on the poster holding a gun and that this was an action flick. The less you know about a movie, the better it can be.
johnlink ranks GROSSE POINTE BLANK (1997)
•May 31, 2015 • Leave a CommentLittle background on this blog. Back in 2008 I was involved in a podcast with my wife, my brother, and our long time friend. Called ‘The Iocaine Project’, it was a forum for us to talk about movies, books, music, or whatever. We had a website attached to the podcast, and I decided to write some articles on movies I loved. One of those was for GROSSE POINTE BLANK – this would have been in late 2008 (another one was for OUT OF SIGHT). Sometime soon after, I got the idea to make writing a movie blog, one in which I would write about every single movie I watched. Six and a half years and 840-someodd movies later, I’m still here kicking around. In a lot of ways, GROSSE POINTE BLANK was one of the embers that started this little fire I’ve been maintaining over the years. So if I come to it with a bit of a bias, well that just can’t be helped.

johnlink ranks THE PRINCE (2014)
•May 27, 2015 • Leave a CommentTime was, when Bruce Willis and John Cusack put out an action-revenge movie, it would be a huge deal (even if Jason Patric was playing the lead role). But this ain’t 1995 anymore, and so THE PRINCE was a quietly released film with out much fanfare. It came across Amazon Prime the other day. And even if they don’t have the cache they used to, I’m still always going to give Willis and Cusack a shot.
