johnlink ranks INHERIT THE WIND (1960)

•February 20, 2015 • 1 Comment

Someone with a lot of time on their hands could go through the history of this blog and track the periods when I had little free time. They would be marked by one of two things. First: A series of mindless entertainment movies (which may or may not be good) but which require little thinking and often result in lackluster writing pieces (See: my two-days-late review on FROM PARIS WITH LOVE). Second: Extended absence. Like, a month of not watching a single movie. That happens too. But I always tend to come out of either of these periods swinging. I may not be out of the current mindless entertainment period yet. In fact, my March looks stupid busy. But as I wrap up a February vacation filled with rehearsals, I wanted to bite something which took some chewing. I found my way to INHERIT THE WIND.

johnlink ranks I, FRANKENSTEIN (2014)

•February 20, 2015 • 2 Comments

You ever start a movie you know will be bad? There must be a masochistic side of me. Or maybe I just think that one of these CGI-loaded monsterfests will one day give us something good. But I watched I, FRANKENSTEIN, every single minute of it. And I’m here to tell you: Don’t make the same mistake I did. I should mention, too, that this posted up earlier in the month over at THE IPC for a particularly odoriferous contest he runs on the regular.

johnlink ranks FROM PARIS WITH LOVE (2010)

My movie watching in February has been down. Probably partly due to directing two plays at the same time. But, perhaps, more directly due to binge watching Justified (which is an AWESOME show… just finished season two). Anyway, I needed a movie. An entertaining movie. An action movie. So I picked FROM PARIS WITH LOVE. Which, it turns out, has a ‘story by’ credit for Luc Besson. Seriously… is that guy involved in 62% of all 21st century action films, or is it just me?

johnlink ranks THE PEACEMAKER (1997)

THE PEACEMAKER was the first tim released under the Dreamworks banner. So if you ever get that question at trivia night, now you have the answer. Only that question will probably never get asked, because THE PEACEMAKER isn’t really a movie anybody bothers remembering.

johnlink ranks ALIEN (1979)

I’ve been sitting on the ALIEN series Blu Rays for some time. It’s one of those series of which I’ve seen all of the movies (well, except maybe that second AvP flick) but it has been awhile since I’ve absorbed them. Sat down to the first one for the first time in way too long.

johnlink ranks LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE (2003)

My wife and I made the errant decision to rewatch the first TOMB RAIDER late last year. You would have thought that we had learned. But, instead, we decided to tempt the fates and rewatch the second TOMB RAIDER on this cold February night.

johnlink ranks DETENTION OF THE DEAD (2012)

I’m a sucker for silly horror. Especially on the last day of a long (but productive) conference on Arts Integration, it was time for some silly horror comedy. DETENTION OF THE DEAD is a movie that’s been lurking on Starz Play for awhile. I knew it was probably dumb, so I needed the right time to unleash the fury. Added bonus: The high school in this movie is Lincoln High. Their mascot: The Lions. Ironically, despite being named John Lincoln I grew up in Cumberland, Rhode Island though our rival next town over was the Lincoln Lions. It all comes full circle. In a silly horror movie.

johnlink ranks THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (2014)

I didn’t realize that the remake of THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN had even been finished, let alone released. When it popped up on Amazon Prime I found myself mildly excited to see what they did with it. Of all the famous slasher films from the 70s and 80s, the original TOWN was a movie which was relatively unknown and could have used an update.

johnlink ranks LOGAN’S RUN (1976)

•January 31, 2015 • 1 Comment

There is a special place for 70s sic-fi. I’m not sure it is always a good place, but it’s a special place. Some 70s sci-fi is all-time-great stuff. Other 70s sic-fi is a psychedelic mess. Somewhere in the vast space between those two concepts is where LOGAN’S RUN resides. It’s a movie I had never seen before, but now I can say that I have.

johnlink ranks THE WOMAN IN BLACK (2012)

•January 31, 2015 • 3 Comments

Daniel Radcliffe went through the “I’m not Harry Potter” tour as he wrapped up that series. It says something about him as an actor that he is able to shake that persona so easily. THE WOMAN IN BLACK is not a particularly good movie, but it is never because you’re sitting there thinking “Why doesn’t Harry just cast a spell and get this over with?”
