This article recently appeared over at Flashback/Backslide as part of the Marvel Blogathon there. I’m glad I signed up for this film, since I wanted an excuse to watch the Director’s Cut after the theatrical release of DAREDEVIL was such a disappointment.
johnlink ranks V FOR VENDETTA (2005)
•January 28, 2015 • Leave a CommentWhen I saw this in theaters ten years ago I remember liking it, but not appreciating it as much as others seemed to. I wasn’t as aware of the world political landscape back then. V FOR VENDETTA is a movie I have found myself thinking about some lately, certainly in part because the group Anonymous has attached themselves to the movie’s iconography. Finally got around to seeing it for a second time, and I am glad I did.
johnlink ranks ANY GIVEN SUNDAY (1999)
•January 26, 2015 • 3 CommentsAs a New England Patriots fan, this should be a wonderful couple of weeks. Instead, there has been nine days of silly talk about deflated footballs and hashtags and another cliched -gate added to a word that doesn’t need it. But, whatever. With the Super Bowl coming I thought it was time to finally see a movie that has long been on my list to see.
johnlink ranks THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951)
•January 26, 2015 • 7 CommentsBig round number alert! THE AFRICAN QUEEN marks movie ranking number 800 for johnlinkmovies! When I hit one of these numbers (or at least when I actually notice I’m about to hit one), I try and watch something I think will be good. And while I have seen a large percentage of the Humphrey Bogart catalogue, THE AFRICAN QUEEN is one of the biggies that I had yet to get to.
johnlink ranks CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014)
•January 25, 2015 • Leave a CommentThe first CAPTAIN AMERICA movie, in my opinion, was a disappointment. The CGI was a cloud hanging over the entire film, delegitimizing the reality they wanted us to experience. Everything about that first Captain experience was underwhelming and silly. But the character found his footing in THE AVENGERS, and this second solo film promised to bring a stronger presence.

johnlink ranks LOCKE (2013)
•January 22, 2015 • 2 CommentsLOCKE is one of those one location, one actor movies that seems to have found some footing with the advent of the cell phone making such movies more than just a film where some guy only talks to himself. In this case, the location is a BMW and the actor is Tom Hardy. This type of movie usually requires a good script and a strong performance, so I am always willing to give one a run.
johnlink ranks LUCY (2014)
•January 20, 2015 • 3 CommentsSlowly, but surely, I’m catching up on some recent releases. LUCY is a brain-potential movie from Luc Besson which reportedly took him nearly a decade to get made. All that time filtered into a 90 minute movie. Go figure.
johnlink ranks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014)
•January 19, 2015 • 6 CommentsA good friend made the six hour trek up this way to watch the AFC Championship Game (Way to go Pats!). But he also brought a few movies. One of them was GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. As usual, I’m seeing this way after everyone else.

johnlink ranks DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (1988)
•January 17, 2015 • Leave a CommentI’ve seen most of Steve Martin’s work. He made a bunch of good stuff in the 80s and 90s, and there are few big titles I’ve left to see. One of those titles, though, was DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. I finally got a chance to knock that one off the list.
