johnlink ranks THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (2014)

At this point, I’m over the fact that they rebooted this series way too early. The casting has been good enough that, even if the first movie felt somewhat unnecessary, I knew I’d see the second one eventually. I wasn’t in a huge rush mostly due to the fact that the word of mouth on this wasn’t great. I went in with modest expectations.

johnlink ranks HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN (2011)

So in trying to find a movie to watch, I settled on this one. I knew it would be silly, but I hoped for silly good, not silly terrible. When going into a grindhouse film, you can’t expect art. You just want some fun.

johnlink ranks POMPEII (2014)

This is how Hollywood works its worst black magic. POMPEII, a love story and action movie set in front of a backdrop of a famous eruption, is the worst kind of generic story making. With a couple of established stars (Jack Bauer and Trinity) and a new hero (Jon Snow), you could tell from the trailer that this would be an unoriginal money grab. Yet, I knew I would eventually see it anyway.

johnlink ranks DEEPSTAR SIX (1989)

Had never heard of this sci-fi/horror film before stumbling upon it last night. And, really, any time you can find a potentially bad late 80s sic-fi/horror film you need to take the opportunity to watch it. As least, that’s how I feel.

johnlink ranks STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (2013)

I saw the first STAR TREK reboot in theaters in 2009. I meant to watch that again before seeing this one, but I don’t think it really  mattered. This second STAR TREK was fairly standalone. On the plus side, I just discovered that my Blu Ray player can hook up to my Amazon Prime subscription. No more watching Prime movies on an iPad mini!

johnlink ranks UNDER THE SKIN (2013)

I haven’t been seeking this movie out. It is one of a number of polarizing films which some people hate and then those who love it love to tell other people that they just don’t get it. I have nothing against films like that, at their best they are of super high quality like TREE OF LIFE, but they do take some energy to sit through. But UNDER THE SKIN popped up as a new release on Amazon Prime, and I thought I would see what it was all about.

As usual, when it comes to uber-large movies, I’m a year late to the party. We’ve had this movie for awhile. The kids have watched it a couple of times. But watching this with them tonight, on a snowy Thanksgiving-Eve, was the first time I had ever seen it all the way through.

johnlink ranks FIREMAN, SAVE MY CHILD (1932)

This movie came across TCM recently, and I snagged it because it featured a comedian named Joe E. Brown. I’d never heard of him before, but TCM was running a whole bunch of his movies and I figured I would pick one that sounded decent. These early comedies are really hit or miss. So I had absolutely no idea what I was in for.

johnlink ranks THE CALL (2013)

Generic suspense is better than no suspense at all. Which is why I decided to watch this film, even though I suspected it may be uniquely generic (and don’t you dare call me an oxymoron). I mean, that bland title? Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin in a WWE Films produced movie about a 911 operator? That sounds like it belongs in the $2 bin of a Black Friday sale to me! But, thing is… this turned out to be better than average. It has some flaws, but it’s not so bad. How is that possible? You’ll just have to read on to find out.

What I just did there? That’s called suspense!

johnlink ranks PRIDE AND GLORY (2008)

This is one of those movies with solid actors, yet seemingly no hype. It didn’t have a memorable run in theaters, no one really talked about it. I’ve had it on Blu Ray for a couple of years, and just never watched it. But anything with Ed Norton and Colin Farrell deserves a run.
