johnlink ranks A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD (1989)

The fourth NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was very bad. But, after a night off from the series, I went back for more. Not sure what else to say in this intro. I’m running out of ideas. So, on to the article…

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER (1988)

When I hit a milestone movie around here, defined loosely as a movie arbitrarily important because it is a round number, I usually go for something I know is good, that I’ve seen, but that I haven’t reviewed. 100 was GHOSTBUSTERS. 200 was PRINCESS BRIDE. 400 was SHAWSHANK. And so on. So, here we are at 750. Three-quarters of 1000. And what happened? I lost track and watched NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4. But who knows… maybe it is a secret cinematic gem…

On to the next NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, this one is supposedly one of the good ones. I went into it thinking that it had better be, or that I might not actually make it much further into the series. So what is the verdict?

After being underwhelmed by the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, I’m not sure I made the right decision in choosing this series to watch leading up to Halloween. I’m not sure I’ll get my wife to watch five more of these after watching the first two, but I think she will soldier on. So, here we go with the cinematic classic, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2!

johnlink ranks A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984)

I saw the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET back in college (so we are talking 21st century here). I didn’t find it particularly scary or unnerving then. But Amazon had all 7 of these movies for under 20 bucks. So who am I to argue that kind of value. I’ve only ever seen the first. We will see how far into this series I get…

johnlink ranks THE GHOST OF YOTSUYA (Tokaido Yotsua kaidan) (1959)

I am pretty committed to watching any and all horror movies in October. So when this small Japanese ghost story came across TCM, I figured I would watch it. Sure, I knew nothing about it, and figured it might be silly. But that’s how you find new things. Turns out, it is just a little bit crazy.

I’ve been honestly avoiding this one for awhile. I am not a fan of the rape-horror genre. I did see the original many years ago and thought it was pure exploitation. I had heard, fleetingly, that this new one tries to be more of a modern horror story. I gave it a shot, though really wasn’t sure going in.

johnlink ranks SIGNS (2002)

•October 8, 2014 • 5 Comments

Twelve years ago, when SIGNS debuted, Mel Gibson was one of the most bankable stars on Earth and M. Night Shyamalan was considered a can’t-miss Director. My, my, my. How things have changed. SIGNS felt like a good movie when I saw it ten years ago. Has the shine washed off?

johnlink ranks ERASER (1996)

When talking about classic Schwarzenegger, ERASER is not a title which comes up. That probably has to do more with time than quality. Is COMMANDO or RED HEAT really a better movie? Probably not. But the standards of the 90s action flick were different than the standards of the 80s action flick. Now, in 2014, neither of the standards by which an action movie would get made 20 or 30 years ago still apply. The increase in the quality (and quantity) of television programming has a lot to do with that. Anyway, an HD ERASER came across my TV and I just couldn’t resist. I hadn’t seen this since I saw it in theaters 18 years ago.

johnlink ranks THE POSSESSION (2012)

It is now October, which means that I will be giving any Halloweeny type movie a chance. My standards drop significantly in search for that diamond in the rough. I’ve found a few over the years. Not enough to make this a sane proposition, but enough to keep me going. Would THE POSSESSION be such a find?
