johnlink ranks CAPE FEAR (1962)

•August 7, 2014 • 2 Comments

So I sat down and watched the CAPE FEAR remake, wrote the article, looked at the clock and decided that I had some time to watch the original too. I’m not sure if I’ve ever watched an original and a remake in the same day, let alone in the opposite order.

I plan on watching the original CAPE FEAR from 1962, but have been sitting on the remake for way too long. With us returning from Fios to the satellite tomorrow, I was running out of time before my DVR was blown up.

johnlink ranks THE GREAT GATSBY (2013)

•August 2, 2014 • 1 Comment

I’m behind on my major movies, as usual. I’ve been sitting on GREAT GATSBY for awhile, but my aversion to Baz Luhrmann as a Director has kept me off of it since it hit Blu Ray half a year ago. Finally got to see it last night, though. Overall, I am happy that I did.

johnlink ranks ARBITRAGE (2012)

•July 31, 2014 • 1 Comment

After an unintentional run of action films on this site dating back the last couple of weeks, it is nice to get at something slightly different. ARBITRAGE is an economic thriller, which is not exactly a major sub-genre. Smartly, it also evolves into a more traditional thriller as it goes on. But now I am getting ahead of myself…

johnlink ranks FACE/OFF (1997)

•July 30, 2014 • 10 Comments

Some movies you see far too many times as a teenager and just know it probably isn’t good to go back and revisit. But FACE/OFF, despite a top 5 all time absurd premise, is a movie begging to be seen again. Cage. Travolta. Woo. All three of those guys were at the height of their powers, and all three have come down in regard (Woo less than the others) in the 17 years since this movie came out.

johnlink ranks JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT (2014)

•July 26, 2014 • 4 Comments

I was just talking about this movie and it fell into my lap. While excited by Jack Ryan being back on screen, this felt like it could be a little generic. On the other hand, it was Directed By Kenneth Branagh, so it couldn’t be all bad, right?

johnlink ranks TOP GUN (1986)

•July 25, 2014 • 3 Comments

I didn’t anticipate watching Tom Cruise twice in two days. But then I got a call asking me to act in some kind of TOP GUN trailer parody about which I know nothing except that it involves motion capture and that I’ll be wearing a flight costume. Sounds exciting. I said yes, which immediately followed with the realization that I haven’t seen TOP GUN in at least a dozen years. So I watched it again.

johnlink ranks JACK REACHER (2012)

•July 24, 2014 • 10 Comments

This is one that has been on my radar for awhile. As much as I am not a particular fan of Tom Cruise as a personality, it is hard to argue that he has a hell of a track record when it comes to making entertaining films. Some people can put aside what they think of him, some can’t. I, for one, will never shy away from seeing something he’s done.

johnlink ranks LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER (2001)

Sometimes you just want to watch something mind-numbingly simple which won’t require a single spent brain cell. We can be a masochistic species.

johnlink ranks A MODERN MUSKETEER (1917)

•July 20, 2014 • Leave a Comment

I don’t watch just any silent film. The premise needs to sound worthy, and I tend to shy away from silent movies with a run time over two hours because I lack culture. I stumbled upon A MODERN MUSKETEER on Turner Classics On-Demand. It is not a two hour silent film, coming in at roughly 70 minutes. When I started the film I didn’t realize it was a Douglas Fairbanks movie, and I’ve never seen a Douglas Fairbanks movie (this is Senior, not Junior, though no one called him Senior until the success of Junior). The premise was that a guy in Kansas wanted to be a modern day D’Artagnan. Other than that, I knew absolutely nothing about it when I put it on. Anyway, this picture is of Director Allan Dwan watching as Fairbanks descends down a rope on location at the Grand Canyon.
