johnlink ranks THOR: THE DARK WORLD (2013)

Slowly working my way through the second phase of Marvel films. I finally saw IRON MAN 3 a couple of months back and got to THOR 2 last night. Now I just need to get around to seeing the second CAPTAIN AMERICA film (which I hear is great) and I will be all caught up.

johnlink ranks PUSS IN BOOTS (2011)

•July 16, 2014 • 2 Comments

Though I’ve mentioned this before, my son’s favorite movie (and he will be four in September) is WALL-E. He’s seen that roughly two hundred times in the last year, without exaggerating too much. Second on his list is PUSS IN BOOTS, which he has probably watched a good thirty to forty times. I’ve probably seen this movie in its entirety by watching it in pieces with him. Today, however, was the first time we sat down (with his little sister Charlie too) and watched it all beginning to end.

johnlink ranks THIS THING WITH SARAH (2013)

Had quite the double feature last night. Started with one of the grandest epics in the history of cinema, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, and finished with a small, personal indie film called THIS THING WITH SARAH. I would like to stake claim to being the first person ever to watch those two movies in that particular order.

I’ve had the LAWRENCE OF ARABIA DVD for at least ten years. It’s run-time, and my silly refusal to watch things in more than one sitting, meant I never got around to it. Until now!

johnlink ranks TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL (2010)

I recently reviewed a terrible horror/comedy/gore-fest called HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS . While it did have some gore, it was lacking on both the horror and comedy aspects of a horror-comedy. Last night, I watched another horror-comedy containing an ampersand in the title: TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL. But was it any better?

johnlink ranks WINCHESTER ’73 (1950)

I usually don’t run out to see Westerns. I find them often to be cliched and similar. I suppose one could say that about most any genre, horror and thriller particularly, but the benefits of the Western usually don’t speak to me like the potential to find a great horror flick or a great thriller. On the other hand, I like the Jimmy Stewart Westerns I have seen. He is a different kind of Western hero, a more reluctant tough guy. So when WINCHESTER ’73 popped up on my radar, it sounded like a unique enough entry to give it a go. Incidentally, this is my 100th movie of 2014!

johnlink ranks HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS (2013)

I watched this terrible, terrible movie back in June and saved it for Shitfest at The IPC, where it went up a couple of days ago. Hopefully, the three or four people who read this blog didn’t go see this thing as a result of not being warned off in June. This is a case of something being just as bad as it looks.

johnlink ranks THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (2009)

•July 10, 2014 • 4 Comments

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a brutal horror/thriller/survival film which is a direct remake of the Wes Craven 1972 film of the same name. I actually saw some of this when it was in theaters, and thought it looked interesting. I’ve been sitting on the Blu Ray for awhile and finally popped it in late last night.

johnlink ranks THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN (2005)

There is a long list of well regarded comedies which I have not seen. 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN was on that list until now. This was a Judd Apatow movie before that meant anything to anyone. Now nearly a decade old, how is it?

johnlink ranks CREEP (2004)

My wife and kids went to Texas for the week which means I will probably watch movies at a silly rate. My plan was to watch EDGE OF TOMORROW in theaters. My food took too long, so instead, I’m home on Fear Net watching something called CREEP. Sounds promising.
