johnlink ranks THE PARALLAX VIEW (1974)

•July 2, 2014 • 1 Comment

THE PARALLAX VIEW is a movie which comes from a long line of 70s paranoia thrillers set in the political realm. It is 40 years old now, but it was new to me anyway.

johnlink ranks UNTHINKABLE (2010)

This looked like a promising thriller (Fios even promised me that it was “the best thriller of 2010”), so I gave it a shot. Samuel L. Jackson is usually good for some fun anyway, and Michael Sheen always brings it. Seemed like a decent enough movie, even if I had no idea what it was about.

johnlink ranks ARLINGTON ROAD (1999)

Here is movie ranking number 700 for JohnLinkMovies. This feels like a non-milestone. It’s like turning 74, I would suppose. You’ve had enough birthdays to feel like you don’t need to celebrate another one, and turning 75 (or 750) is just around the corner anyway. Regardless, I wanted to watch a movie I knew would be good and I was disappointed had not shown up in the previous 699 and 5 plus years of movie rankings. So I watched a forgotten classic in ARLINGTON ROAD. There will be spoilers below, and I will give notice when they are coming. But if you know absolutely nothing about this movie, just go see it and come back.

johnlink ranks GODZILLA (2014)

GODZILLA only has a limited time left in the theater. It seems like the kind of movie you need to see on the big screen. So, my wife and I ventured out to see it before it goes. I’d heard good things about this one, but went in guarded because the Hollywood GODZILLA was a terrible movie.

Sometimes there is nothing better than catching an old B movie. Sometimes, there are MANY things better than catching an old B movie? Which category does TEN DAYS TO TULARA fall into?

Until now, it has never been an issue to watch these Bond flicks with no regard for order. But having not seen YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, it seems that this last Bond movie of the original Connery Six is slightly disjointed. That said, I’ve seen enough early Bond and enough Austin Powers to know the gig. This marks the fifth Connery Bond I’ve ranked on these pages, missing only the aforementioned original (which I have not seen) and the 1980s revisit.

I don’t know why I do this to myself. But between this and HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS (which I have yet to post as it is being saved for a certain odoriferous summer series), I’ve seen two of the least liked mainstream movies of 2013 in the past week. Oh well.

johnlink ranks THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE (2013)

Every time I trot out a recent comedy I talk about how I don’t watch much comedy anymore and how I really should see more. So I’ll skip all that and just say that I watched THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE. On with the review…

johnlink ranks INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996)

As a teenager, I remember seeing movies like JAWS or STAR WARS and making the realization that they were 20 years old and made before I was born. As I watched INDEPENDENCE DAY for the first time in quite awhile, I was brought back to seeing this thing on opening night in what was probably a fire-code illegal theater in Woonsocket, RI. It has been 18 years since ID4 hit theaters, which is just crazy.

johnlink ranks THE INTERPRETER (2005)

•June 15, 2014 • Leave a Comment

I’m closing in on 700 movie/review rankings and that sort of a sample size allows me to make some observations based on five plus years of logging every movie I see. One such note is that I’ll often go on genre runs without even thinking about it. This happens with horror movies a lot (especially in the fall). Currently, I’m in the midst of an uninterrupted run of thrillers with TAKEN, SPIDER-MAN (a stretch admittedly), IN THE LINE OF FIRE, AWAKE, and THE KILLING. Well, go ahead and add THE INTERPRETER to that list.
