johnlink ranks THE KILLING (1956)

My interest in THE KILLING has always been based on the fact that it is early Stanley Kubrick (made before he was even 30). But, in all honesty, I did not even know what it was about. As I was browsing movie choices last evening I saw that it was a heist film. I never knew Kubrick made a heist film. It took me all of a quarter of a second to decide on watching THE KILLING after learning that fact.

johnlink ranks AWAKE (2007)

•June 12, 2014 • 4 Comments

I vaguely remember hearing about this movie. Terrence Howard. Anakin Skywalker. Jessica Alba. Something about an anesthesiologist. I dunno. But it was under the thriller heading on Amazon Prime and that’s enough for me to try.

johnlink ranks IN THE LINE OF FIRE (1993)

I saw this movie probably fifteen years ago. All I remember is a plastic gun and Clint Eastwood losing his breath as he ran along side the Presidential limo. This is a movie I remember being good, so it is nice to get back at it.

johnlink ranks SPIDER-MAN (2002)

•June 9, 2014 • 2 Comments

After zipping through a whole bunch of X-Men movies last month, most pertently the original trilogy, I decided to hit up the original SPIDER-MAN flicks. The popular opinion of the two series is similar. Solid first two entries, much maligned third chapter. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen these, so it will be cool to check them out again.

johnlink re-ranks TAKEN (2008)

•June 8, 2014 • 2 Comments

I started this blog way back in the aughts. 2009. TAKEN was one of the first movies I ranked, in February of that year, back when I wasn’t writing an article as much as merely reflecting on the four main scoring categories: Film, Movie, Acting, and Writing. I’d like to think my article writing has gotten more sophisticated in five years, but I’d also like to think that Jennifer Lawrence secretly wants to be with me in an alternate universe. So I’m pretty much delusional. Anyway, it’s good to get back at some of these movies that I’ve considered awhile back but haven’t seen since my blog was in its infancy.

FILM 101: NUIT ET BROUILLARD (NIGHT AND FOG) (1955)

•June 7, 2014 • Leave a Comment

I’m not in the business of giving a score and doing the full ranking for every short film I see. I guess I have to draw the line somewhere. But when I see a landmark short and have the desire to talk about it a little bit, I see a perfect opportunity to drag out the old FILM 101 series as an excuse. I’ve done this once before for A TRIP TO THE MOON, and am bringing it back around for Alain Resnais’ powerfully brutal short documentary about concentration camps, Nuit et brouillard, which translates as NIGHT AND FOG.

johnlink ranks SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (2012)

Between SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and LES MIS, I am finally catching up on the 2013 Oscars. Better late than never I guess. This might be the longest it has taken me to see a Jennifer Lawrence movie, though. Love her.

johnlink ranks X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (2014)

•June 4, 2014 • 5 Comments

Finally got through the original trilogy and got a chance to pop in and see the newest X-MEN. The hype has been good on this one, and I can’t fully blame others. I got a chance to see the opening battle sequence at a conference last month and my radar was definitely up for this one. This may be a couple weeks late in terms of new releases, but this is about as current as I get these days. I blame my children.

johnlink ranks X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006)

•June 3, 2014 • 2 Comments

I sort of assumed that I would never see this movie again. When I saw it in theaters the level of disappointment was deep. But with the new X-MEN out, I wanted to revisit the original trilogy since it had been eight years since the third’s release. I held out hope that maybe I was wrong. Maybe time was kind to this movie. Nope. It still sucks. Several times during this movie I made the same face as Wolverine does here:

Stumbled upon this movie on Amazon Prime. Knew absolutely nothing about it. Hadn’t even heard of it. Saw it was listed as sci-fi/animated and it had this poster:
