Somewhere on the interwebs I saw this referred to as the best horror movie of 2013. That is reason enough for me to give it a go.. Good cast, interesting filmmakers, unique story. How good is it?
johnlink ranks BAB EL HADID (CAIRO STATION) (1958)
•January 30, 2014 • Leave a CommentIMDB lists this film as THE IRON GATE. I watched it on TCM under the title CAIRO STATION. The original Egyptian title is BAB EL HADID. Whatever you want to call it, this is a movie I was introduced to when I watched the STORY OF FILM documentary several months ago. It has sat on my DVR for awhile, and I finally got around to seeing it. This is considered one of the great gems of Egyptian cinema. So how is it?

johnlink ranks WALL-E (2008)
•January 29, 2014 • 6 CommentsIn a way, it is surprising that it has taken this long to post WALL-E. My 3 year old has been watching this pretty consistently for the past six months. I’ve been seeing it in pieces (though I’ve seen it twice before). With the kids recovering from the flu, today was the first day he and I sat down and watched it straight through, beginning to end. A few spoilers below.
johnlink ranks THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002)
•January 28, 2014 • 7 CommentsReturned to Middle Earth again for the second part of the original Peter Jackson trilogy. It’s been far too long since I saw this entire series, I’ve come to realize, and I actually have never seen the extended version of the third movie. Looking forward to getting at that soon. But first, here is the ranking for the extended version of THE TWO TOWERS.

johnlink ranks PAIN & GAIN (2013)
•January 26, 2014 • 6 CommentsAhhh, Michael Bay. There are only so many movies out there left I have not seen of yours. I haven’t particularly liked any of the films you have directed since the turn of the 21st century. Coincidentally, that is when I graduated high school. On the other hand, I had heard that PAIN & GAIN was a callback to simpler days. I had some hopes for this one, albeit guarded hopes. So… does PAIN & GAIN work out?
johnlink ranks DANGEROUS CROSSING (1953)
•January 25, 2014 • Leave a CommentThis is a B-film noir set on a cruise ship. If nothing else, I can’t think of another film noir set entirely on a boat. Thus endeth my shortest pre-article intro ever.
johnlink ranks 50/50 (2011)
•January 21, 2014 • 5 CommentsI’m going to spend a decent amount of time talking about this interesting movie. But first, I have a confession. My name is John Lincoln and I look like Seth Rogen. This is not a brag. This is not a ‘claim to fame’. It is also, sadly, a legitimate statement. My students called me Mr. Rogen all through student teaching. I’ve had beers bought for me by drunk guys who “want to buy Seth Rogen a drink.” I’ve been stopped in airports. Working at a movie theater, I hear “Hey has anyone ever told you that you like…” at least three or four times a week. It is a curse. I only bring this up because it feels good to get it off my chest. I haven’t seen a Seth Rogen movie in several years, and this seemed like the opportune time. Hopefully we can all move on with our lives.
johnlink ranks WALKABOUT (1971)
•January 18, 2014 • 1 CommentWhile everyone else is talking Oscars, I am missing out on the fun and instead stumbling on forty year old films set in Australia. Would I rather have watched WOLF OF WALL STREET? Perhaps. But I’m glad to have finally seen this film that I’ve only ever heard of through Ebert’s Great Movies series.
johnlink ranks A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD (2013)
•January 13, 2014 • 8 CommentsUnintentionally, I seem to be splitting the last few weeks between Middle Earth and weakly received movies. A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD definitely has nothing to do with Hobbits, so…
