johnlink ranks THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE (2013)

•November 26, 2013 • 2 Comments

I so much prefer to walk into a movie without having any idea what I’m getting into. I’ve avoided all the trailers, scanned past all articles, skipped over any interviews. I liked the first HUNGER GAMES enough to know I wanted to see the second one. Why bother having things ruined? I didn’t even know if the titular games had anything to do with the sequel. I assumed that ship had sailed. So, if you’ve been doing the same, don’t read this article. But if you’re a normal human being who doesn’t mind seeing a trailer or two, I’m sure what follows will be spoiler free.

johnlink re-ranks THE HUNGER GAMES (2012)

I have a date with my wife to see CATCHING FIRE tomorrow. We wanted to revisit HUGER GAMES before going into the sequel, so we did just that. I did rank this back when it hit theaters, so here is a link to my original thoughts.

johnlink ranks PRIMARY (1960)

In a way, this belongs as a Film 101 entry. PRIMARY is a sub-hour documentary about the Wisconsin Democratic primary between John F Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. While certainly considered a film in its time, this is the sort of run time which would be an hour special on something like CNN in today’s landscape. Only, PRIMARY is more important than that. While it’s subject is certainly fascinating, it is the WAY this movie was filmed which marks it as an important moment in the history of film.

johnlink ranks HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET (2012)

A movie with the word “house” in its title has at least a 70/30 shot of being a horror movie. This Jennifer Lawrence vehicle is no exception. This was filmed in 2010 before her fame erupted, but released in 2012 when she was well known. Would she have done the movie if she were as big a name in 2010? Probably not. Does that mean this is a bad movie. Well…

johnlink ranks FOLLOWING (1998)

Maybe this makes me a poor student of film, but I never knew Christopher Nolan had an early black and white film called FOLLOWING. I found it on Amazon Prime and thought I would give it a run.

johnlink ranks THE SET-UP (1949)

•November 11, 2013 • 2 Comments

This is a movie DVRd off of Turner Classics for its description. The idea is that a boxer talks to his wife about his life before going into a boxing match he is supposed to throw. If the premise sounds interesting, it feels an awful lot like the Bruce Willis thread in PULP FICTION. While THE SET-UP is, itself, a sort of pulp fiction, it is safe to say that Tarantino did not lift or pay homage to this movie directly in his film. It would seem, however, he may have seen it in determining the tone of his characters for that segment. Now, on to the ranking.

johnlink ranks POINT BLANK (1967)

587 movies in, and I finally saw a movie from 1967! That’s a weird stat. There are a few other years I’m missing. The latest of those years is 1983, which is odd. I have six movies in from 1982 and six in from 1984, but none from 1983. What’s that? You don’t care? Oh. Good point. Here’s the movie ranking for POINT BLANK.

johnlink ranks OLIVER & COMPANY (1988)

Sometimes we watch a certain double feature and wonder “Hey, did I just become the first person in history to watch those two movies back-to-back?” That happened to me yesterday. A double feature of OLIVER & COMPANY, an animated Disney film, followed up with the 1967 Lee Marvin action film POINT BLANK. They make for a heck of a double feature. Anyway, on to the first…

johnlink ranks I AM (2010)

I’m student teaching this semester. One class I have observed more than taught is a class called Student Artists to Young Professionals. The concept is to get seniors to understand some of the challenges they will face as adults. In practice, this is a class to discuss ideas, plan for the future, and really do anything that the teacher and students decide is relevant. It’s a nice model. Anyway, the lead teacher brought this movie in to share. I AM is a documentary which asks some big life questions.

Well, October may be over and Halloween may be past, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at my DVR. I still have some residual horror left to get to. I may not (scratch that… will not) get to them all. But I was in the mood for something low maintenance, so I went with this regularly panned road trip flick.
