Despite working 40 hours a week at a movie theater, I am regularly a year behind in my movie viewing (I blame my children). SKYFALL, the third Bond movie in the Daniel Craig line, is a film I had every intention of seeing during its opening weekend. Almost exactly a year later, I finally did.
johnlink ranks CROPSEY (2009)
•October 31, 2013 • Leave a CommentWinner of Best Documentary at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, CROPSEY comes from a couple of filmmakers who dig into the truth behind an urban legend they grew up hearing in Staten Island.
johnlink ranks DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004)
•October 30, 2013 • 1 CommentWhen this was in the process of being released this seemed like an unnecessary remake of a cult horror film. This was the directing debut of an unknown music video director named Zack Snyder. Could it possibly hope to be any good?
johnlink bundles his PARANORMAL ACTIVITY rankings
•October 27, 2013 • 5 CommentsI am way behind on throwing these four movie reviews into a single place. But Halloween is approaching and I haven’t watched a movie in awhile (thanks to the World Series), so this seems an opportune time to do it. Below are links to and comments on all four of the American PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films.

johnlink ranks WHITE NOISE (2005)
•October 23, 2013 • 4 CommentsIt’s not a good sign when you’ve seen a movie which is only 8 years old, but can remember nothing at all about it. On the one hand, it wasn’t good enough to make an impression. Though, on the other hand, it wasn’t so terrible as to brand a black mark in your brain. It’s October. In October we watch horror movies we would otherwise pass by. At least I do. I should probably just switch over to watching GOOD horror movies in October.
johnlink ranks MAMA (2013)
•October 22, 2013 • 1 CommentToday brings another October horror movie to log. MAMA is a modern ghost story which was released earlier this year. It was relatively well received in theaters by the patrons who passed through, though it was a media darling by no means.
johnlink ranks SAFETY LAST! (1923)
•October 16, 2013 • 1 CommentMust plead ignorance, here, as it relates to Harold Lloyd. I’ve always been equal parts Keaton and Chaplin when it comes to silent comedy. I’ve always known of Lloyd, and have certainly seen bits and clips, yet I’ve never just sat down and experienced one of his comedies. But I have now!
johnlink ranks DEAD SILENCE (2007)
•October 12, 2013 • 2 CommentsDEAD SILENCE is the follow up to the 2004 film SAW for director James Wan, who has since gone on to do such well received movies as the two INSIDIOUS films and THE CONJURING. I like Wan’s vision, and I decided to give this a run despite its uninspiring premise.
johnlink ranks MIDNIGHT RUN (1988)
•October 6, 2013 • 1 CommentIt seems that anyone who knows MIDNIGHT RUN carries a major torch for it and heralds it as one of the premier action/comedy flicks of the 1980s. I am not one of those people, or at least I wasn’t. This is a movie which I had always heard about, but never seen. Recently, Bill Simmons from the sports & entertainment website Grantland, wrote a major 2-part NBA off-season review using a couple dozen MIDNIGHT RUN quotes. Suffice it to say, I DVRd the movie next time it popped up on HBO. This is one I’m really glad to have finally caught.
johnlink ranks SESSION 9 (2001)
•October 4, 2013 • Leave a CommentI saw this a couple of times back when I first got it on DVD. That was probably ’04 or ’05 or so. I’ve been thinking about SESSION 9 lately, though I couldn’t particularly say why. But it is October. It is the time for horror and psychological thrillers and suspenseful scariness. SESSION 9 seemed like a good fit.
