Over at another site, the IFC, a fellow blogger puts out a wonderful series called Shitfest. For this series, other bloggers find something terrible to watch and submit. The deadline is the end of August and I happily committed to providing an article. Last time I went with an old article, my trashing of the recent TEXAS CHAINSAW movie. This time, I wanted to do something fresh rather than digging into the archives. I could have done the weak SILENT HILL sequel I just suffered through, but I’m not sure that movie brings others as much pain as it does me. I thought, however, that THE APPARITION might fill the bill perfectly. TWILIGHT actress, PG-13 horror, 4.0 score on IMDB, generic title, minimal theatrical run, derivative story. But, the question remained, was it bad enough to qualify for Shitfest?
johnlink ranks SILENT HILL: REVELATION (2012)
•August 18, 2013 • 3 CommentsI’ve been sitting on this movie for awhile. I recently documented my love for the first film, and I fully realize how miraculous it is that we got even one great SILENT HILL movie. I had major concerns about this sequel. New director, many new actors, and a focus on 3D (I didn’t watch this in 3D at home) seemed to point to a more standard horror movie experience. But, after plenty of delay, I did finally watch the movie…

johnlink ranks THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956)
•August 16, 2013 • Leave a CommentThere aren’t a ton of the Hitchcock movies from the 50s or 60s which are new to me. I haven’t delved much into the 40s, and I’ve seen very few of the 30s stuff. But I know most of the films from the time when he was churning out classic after classic. I’ve been sitting on THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH for awhile. There are only so many Jimmy Stewart led Hitchcock pictures you ever get to adsorb for the very first time.

johnlink re-ranks SILENT HILL (2006)
•August 11, 2013 • 5 CommentsI last watched SILENT HILL way back on January 2nd, 2009. I know that because it was the very first ranking I did for a fledgling blog back when johnlinkmovies was in its infancy (I’ve ranked 560 movies between then and now). I really like SILENT HILL, and I know just how unlikely it was that they would make a good movie out of the one video game series I played with any regularity. I’ve been avoiding the sequel because I am sure it can’t possibly be good. But… just in case… I rented it. So, I needed to revisit the first one first. SOME LIGHT SPOILERS BELOW.
johnlink ranks INHUMAN RESOURCES (2012)
•August 8, 2013 • 2 CommentsTime to class the joint up a little. In the past (i.e. before kids) I would have watched a movie like this on FearNet with a fair amount of beer. Now… well this was on HBO at 6:00 AM and I watched it while my 10-month-old daughter was in various stages of eating/sleeping/playing. Don’t worry, she didn’t see any of it. I’m not that bad of a father yet.
johnlink ranks PANIC ROOM (2002)
•August 6, 2013 • 2 CommentsPANIC ROOM is probably the most lightly regarded of the David Fincher films. The movie went through a couple of casts. In fact Nicole Kidman actually was far enough along that some of the set was built with her height (and not Jodie Foster’s shorter stature) in mind. The movie was going to be small, and turned out to be a huge production which came in way late. But, of course, none of that matters much ten-plus years out. So how does it hold up now?
johnlink ranks TIREZ SUR LE PIANISTE (SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER) (1960)
•August 1, 2013 • 1 CommentDespite considering myself somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to the world of film, I just haven’t seen much Francois Truffaut. Sure, I saw 400 BLOWS in film school, ran accidentally into his FAHRENHEIT 451 a year ago, and I’ve seen bits from some of his other work. I’ve owned DAY FOR NIGHT for close to a decade and haven’t watched it yet. Anyway, TCM had a little marathon of his work recently, so I grabbed a few titles. SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER was Truffaut’s follow-up to THE 400 BLOWS, making it his second feature film.

johnlink ranks THE BOURNE LEGACY (2012)
•July 25, 2013 • Leave a CommentI was split on the idea of transferring the Bourne series to Jeremy Renner playing a brand new character. On one hand, I am glad they didn’t just recast Bourne and do a reboot. On the other, it seems like a new character deserves to not be linked to the Bourne title just as a way of selling extra tickets. Regardless, I wanted to see this, so I’m glad it finally made its way to HBO.
johnlink ranks KILLING THEM SOFTLY (2012)
•July 22, 2013 • Leave a CommentMaybe I’m too nice, but I wasn’t planning on watching this on the plane during my trip back from Denver. You never know who is going to be in your row, and I wasn’t sure what to expect from this, other than that I assumed it might be a violent hard-R rated film. But my rental of THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH took way too long to download using the anciently slow wi-fi in the Denver airport (even after a two hour flight delay) so this was all I had left on the iPad. I had an amicable enough guy sitting next to me, so I figured I could get through this fairly innocently enough.

johnlink ranks DEAD RECKONING (1947)
•July 21, 2013 • Leave a CommentI have very few new major Bogart movies left to see. There is AFRICAN QUEEN and TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT still on my list, for example. But there are plenty of smaller or lesser known Bogart films still to discover. One such film, until today, was DEAD RECKONING.
