So this is a movie with Jeremy Irons (who I love) and Forest Whitaker (who I love) from almost fifteen years ago. I’d never heard of it, and 2001 was back when I was in full movie-geek mode about just about everything. That didn’t bode well for the quality of this movie…
johnlink ranks DOUBLE JEOPARDY (1999)
•November 4, 2015 • 1 CommentI have HBO, but never watch the actual channels live. Most everything is either off the DVR or On-Demand (with the exception of the live airings of Game of Thrones). I can honestly count on one hand the number of times I have watched a movie that has started at the exact time I was sitting down. DOUBLE JEOPARDY raised that number by one.
johnlink ranks NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968)
•November 1, 2015 • 3 CommentsOn Halloween night, there may be no movie more quintessentially in the spirit of all that is spooky than NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. It’s zombies long since a cliche, it is fun to see the movie that is widely considered the one responsible for giving zombies a genre defining moment. Also, there is a full HD version available for free on YouTube (thanks, to be sure, to the fact that Director George A. Romero failed to properly copyright the film). But to save you the jump, here it is:

johnlink ranks 28 WEEKS LATER (2007)
•October 26, 2015 • 1 CommentWith the way life gets in the way, we don’t always get to watch a sequel the day after the original. But here we are with the second in the ’28 (some unit of time) LATER’ series. There were only two. At least for now. Maybe sometime in the 2030s we will finally get 28 YEARS LATER. Don’t hold your breath.

•October 26, 2015 • Leave a CommentWorking through some more horror/suspense films this fine October, and decided to revisit a movie I’d long put in the rear view mirror. 28 DAYS LATER was a bit of a revelation when it hit pop culture in the early 21st century, and its effects are still being felt. However, it may not be quite as good as you remember if you haven’t seen it in the past several years…
johnlink ranks AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (2015)
•October 25, 2015 • Leave a CommentAs usual, I’m a little late to the party. This is one I definitely would have seen during its theatrical run were I not living on the coast of Maine far from a standard multiplex. It ran up here for a weekend, but I just never got out. That’s ok though. Time Warner owed me a free PPV movie for some service outage I think I slept through, so better late than never.

johnlink ranks SPRING (2014)
•October 22, 2015 • Leave a CommentKnew nothing at all about SPRING when I put it on. I only had a very high Rotten Tomatoes score to go by: 89%. Beyond that, I knew the description talked about a guy who loses his mom and then takes a trip to Italy where he meets a girl with a secret. I knew it was considered a horror movie, but it didn’t seem like it belonged in the slasher/action-horror genre. So with that, I went in. I would actually say that approaching it this way is the best way to do it. The less you know, the better. But this is a really nice slow-burn horror film. Recommended for sure.
johnlink ranks TERROR ON A TRAIN (1953)
•October 22, 2015 • 1 CommentTurner Classics is great for movies like this. Something that I’ve never heard of, never would have heard of, and almost certainly never would have seen. The description promised a story about a potential train bombing with Glenn Ford in the lead role. Why not?
johnlink ranks TAKEN 3 (2014)
•October 19, 2015 • 1 CommentTAKEN is no longer a commodity anyone rushes out for anymore. Sure, it’s easy to watch and there is no need to avoid them when they cross your path. But the second one pretty much secured the notion that – despite the first one being really awesome entertainment – the TAKEN series is just a formula. No doubt though, I watched it the weekend it hit HBO because there is nothing wrong with a little formula.
johnlink ranks ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM (2007)
•October 17, 2015 • Leave a CommentI’m a completest. Sometimes that means seeing the newest movie in a series ASAP. Sometimes it means watching all the SAW films long after they have stopped being entertaining. And sometimes that means watching two ALIEN VS. PREDATOR movies within a 24 hour period.
