johnlink ranks AVP: ALIEN VS. PREDATOR (2004)

Geez. I’m just getting old. I remember the hype about AVP coming out. That was more than a decade ago. It was very poorly received, and I remember not being overly impressed when I saw it in theaters. But I did watch all the other ALIENS films this year, and after subjecting myself to the last few in the SAW series, this really can’t be that bad, can it? Besides… much of the anger was the fact that this was made as a PG-13 film, and this shiny Blu Ray I have is an unrated version that is 10 minutes longer. So it must be great! Right?!?

johnlink ranks HEAT (1995)

It is hard to imagine that HEAT is a twenty year old movie. This has a young long-haired Val Kilmer, a 14-year-old Natalie Portman, and in-their-prime performances by Pacino and De Niro. This was, of course, marketed as the first Pacino/De Niro vehicle criptince they appeared (in different eras) in the second GODFATHER film. There was quite a bit of hype when this came out, though it is one of those movies which doesn’t seem to be held in the same reverence of some of the other crime films of the era. But I’m a Michael Mann sucker, and it has been too long since I watched this.

johnlink ranks SAW: THE FINAL CHAPTER (2010)

I did it. I made it all the way through the SAW movies. I did this last year with the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series. And those weren’t better movies, per se, but it was definitely a much more fun experience. I don’t imagine I’ll be watching a SAW movie again any time soon (at least until an eight one comes out…)

johnlink ranks PSYCHO (1960)

Hey, what do you know? This little project, john link movies, hits 900 movie rankings with this post. I try to do something of substance when I see I’m hitting a number with a couple of zeroes in it, and PSYCHO has been on my mind lately. I’m teaching a class of high school students who will be, in turn, teaching a full day symposium to the rest of the high school in January. That class has been pitching each other literary ideas, and one student made an inspired case to have us read and teach Robert Bloch’s novel Psycho. With it on the brain, and with Halloween coming up, now seemed like a great time to revisit this classic. SPOILERS abound below, but if you’ve managed to go this long without ever seeing the shower scene, I don’t know what to tell you.

Don’t have much witty to say in anticipation of SAW VI, so let’s just get on with it…

This Will Smith movie just hit HBO, and I will always hit up a movie which is the center of a multi-circle Venn Diagram which includes Will Smith, Con Artists, and Witty Dialogue. This was the easiest choice I’ve made to watch a movie in awhile.

Obviously, once you have committed to the first four of a series, you are going to keep going. I’m entering unknown territory with the rest of these films, and I am keeping my expectations very, very low after a miserable fourth film. Maybe it is the masochist in me, but I find myself looking forward to continuing on anyway.

johnlink ranks SAW IV (2007)

And we are heading back to the land of SAW. I think I can honestly say that this is the only installment that I had never seen even a moment of. This came out in 2007, right before I started working at a movie theater. I saw pieces of the next three installments – morbid curiosity for sure – but this fourth SAW was the one I’d had no exposure to whatsoever.

johnlink ranks KILL THE MESSENGER (2014)

The true-story news movie has a long and prestigious place in the annals of movie history. While KILL THE MESSENGER may not have the immediate impact of ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN or THE INSIDER, the story is a powerful one which is undertold. I knew nothing about this film going in, but I’m glad I notched it on the belt.

johnlink ranks FOXY BROWN (1974)

Taking a brief break from the run of SAW reviews to catch a cult classic of the 1970s. You never know what you are going to get when you see a movie of this sort more than 40 years after it was made. Last time I tried it was with ENTER THE DRAGON, which is a movie I liked much, much less than everyone else seems to. But that won’t keep me from giving similarly regarded cult classics a shot, of course, so I happily stumbled upon FOXY BROWN.
