I was always under the impression that SNOW WHITE was the first feature-length animated film. Apparently, that is incorrect. This German film predates SNOW WHITE by more than a decade. It is believed to be the oldest surviving animated feature, though there were at least a couple of others which have been lost to time. THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED is a German film directed by a woman named Lotte Reiniger. I’m not the only one ignorant to this film’s existence. In the introduction to this film on TCM, host Robert Osborne admitted to being unaware about this film as well.

•October 21, 2012 • Leave a CommentHARRY BROWN is a bleak and desperate vengeance flick which owes at least a little bit to DEATH WISH. It, amazingly, has an elderly and powerful Michael Caine in the role of the vigilante. This is an English film set in the ghetto, and it is a scrappy little picture. Glad I found it…
johnlink ranks THE DESCENDANTS (2011)
•October 20, 2012 • Leave a CommentHere we go with yet another found-footage horror film. Kidding, kidding. I’ve seen a lot of horror this October (along with some film that are just horrible), so its nice to get to a film I’m fairly certain will class up the joint a little bit. I’m a sucker for George Clooney dramas, especially these slightly quirky ones. UP IN THE AIR was, arguably, my favorite film of 2009 so I had some high expectations going into THE DESCENDANTS.
johnlink bundles his SAMURAI TRILOGY rankings
•October 20, 2012 • 3 CommentsI’m not sure why it has taken me so long to bundle these together, but here are all three of Hiroshi Inagaki’s SAMURAI trilogy articles in one place. The series stars legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune in the lead role, Miyamoto Musashi. I’m sure I said this somewhere over the course of the articles, but when I envisioned tackling a bunch of series in 2012, this was not one of the ones I was thinking of. I am so thankful to Turner Classic Movies for running these movies!

johnlink ranks V/H/S (2012)
•October 19, 2012 • Leave a CommentThis is movie number 466 watched for this project, and the first which starts with the letter ‘V’. How odd is that? Anyway, this is a found footage film which is unique in that it is essentially five short films, with a sixth narrative woven through the telling of the five shorts. Each segment has a unique director. As a result, I am going to consider scores for each segment separately and then combine this all into one cohesive thought at the end. This is a first for this blog, so let’s see how this works out…
johnlink ranks DOLAN’S CADILLAC (2009)
•October 18, 2012 • Leave a CommentBased on one of my personal favorite short stories of Stephen King, DOLAN’S CADILLAC is a movie I’ve long heard might get made. I remember hearing Kevin Bacon’s name attached at one point, and Stallone’s name attached at another. Ultimately, it was made with Wes Bentley in the lead, and Christian Slater as the titular heavy. This movie came across FearNet, I assume, for its King connection only, as it is certainly not a horror film.
johnlink ranks HEADIN’ HOME (1920)
•October 16, 2012 • Leave a CommentI never knew a film like this existed. In 1920, shortly after the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, this film was made. A 25-year-old Ruth plays a character named ‘Babe’. It tells the (not) true story of his young life, and sort of tells how he became a baseball player. The idea of seeing a young Ruth playing baseball in a contemporaneous movie absolutely sold me on seeing this.
johnlink ranks OUTBREAK (1995)
•October 14, 2012 • Leave a CommentSometimes I feel as though I saw every major film release of the 1990s. I don’t say that as a way of bragging, I promise. Instead, it points to my dork-leaning high school years in which I saw everything I could. Somehow, I missed OUTBREAK when it came out, despite having some of my favorite actors. Seventeen years later, I finally got it in.
johnlink ranks THE WOLF MAN (1941)
•October 12, 2012 • Leave a CommentI watched this in a couple of sittings, as this was the film I put on at night while getting my daughter to fall asleep. THE WOLF MAN is one of the iconic Universal Horror entries, and is revered as a classic of the genre. But does it hold up? Does it stand the test of time?
johnlink ranks PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 (2011)
•October 12, 2012 • Leave a CommentBeing home from work for a couple of weeks after the birth of baby number two has been nice. Been able to catch up with family, spend some time with my son, support my wife, visit with friends. Oh, and I was able to watch the entire PARANORMAL ACTIVITY series in four days. But that goes lower on the list, I suppose. SPOILERS at the end of the article, but not before I give another warning. So read on freely.
