johnlink ranks DIAL M FOR MURDER (1954)

•September 22, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Hitchcock’s first of three collaborations with the unparalleled Grace Kelly, DIAL M FOR MURDER is one of his smaller films. Initially shot in 3D, though rarely released as such, this is a color film which is based on a play and takes place almost entirely in one apartment.

johnlink ranks RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011)

•September 20, 2012 • 3 Comments

Confession time: I have never seen a PLANET OF THE APES film. I know a bunch about them, and I am familiar with the tone and events of the series, but I’ve never watched one. So, I come to RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES with a fresh mind and no expectations about what a PLANET OF THE APES film should be. I’ve heard that people like this, but I have no idea how fans of the original feel about it. I would say I don’t know what fans of the Tim Burton version think, but, really, there are no fans of the Tim Burton remake.

johnlink ranks ABDUCTION (2011)

Don’t consider me a Taylor Lautner fan. I did see the first TWILIGHT in the interest of not panning something I had never seen. Let’s just say, I’m not going to be revisiting the series anytime soon. There are generally a couple of genres which teens can be successful in, and the paranoid suspense film is one of them. DISTURBIA is a prime example of this. Because of those quality films, I tend to give anything in the genre a shot. Of course this burns me more than it rewards me, but hey… that’s life.

johnlink ranks KETTO GANRYUJIMA (SAMURAI III: DUEL AT GANRYU ISLAND) (1956)

•September 16, 2012 • 1 Comment

Well, I finally got around to finishing up Hiroshi Inagaki’s SAMURAI trilogy, starring Toshiro Mifune as Japanese legend Musashi Miyamoto. The first two stories concern Musashi learning humility as he kills people using his natural talents. As the third film starts, he has settled into a life of non-violence. I’m really happy to have found this trilogy! Continue reading ‘johnlink ranks KETTO GANRYUJIMA (SAMURAI III: DUEL AT GANRYU ISLAND) (1956)’

johnlink ranks THE SCORE (2001)

This movie had a fairly large impact on me as a young man. Not in any sort of productive or helpful way, but in the fact that I could do a pretty mean impression of Ed Norton’s alter-ego Brian. I was a less sophisticated person in my youth, and wasn’t above doing the impression at inappropriate times. I suppose that would be on my list of things I’d smack my younger self for doing. Anyway, onto THE SCORE!

johnlink ranks THE CHANGE-UP (2011)

•September 13, 2012 • Leave a Comment

I’m on quite the run of comedies; a somewhat unusual happening on this blog. Maybe it is that time of year, maybe it is coincidence, maybe it is Jason Bateman. Whatever the reason, here’s another entry into the switching-bodies genre, THE CHANGE-UP.

johnlink ranks POLTERGEIST (1982)

•September 9, 2012 • 4 Comments

This thirty year old horror flick is new to me. I never found it as a kid, and its one I never tracked down as an adult. POLTERGEIST, in HD, looks great. There is a station I have on Fios called HDNET, which just shows HD movies all day long. I never had this on Cox, and I am so thrilled to have it now. I can imagine being underwhelmed by the filming of this if my first viewing was on VHS. Really impressed with the transfer that was done.

johnlink bundles his EVIL DEAD rankings

•September 7, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Revisited the early EVIL DEAD films way back in February, but didn’t hit up ARMY OF DARKNESS until August. That’s the way these things fall sometimes. With the reboot of EVIL DEAD coming soon (you know, the one that has almost nothing to do with the original EVIL DEAD), I’d rather do this now and pretend a new one was never attempted.

johnlink ranks HORRIBLE BOSSES (2011)

•September 6, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Went up to Westport, NY for a week. Unplugged from the electronic world. It’s been a week since a movie post, but I’m still looking to more than double my movies from last year so I don’t feel too guilty about it. HORRIBLE BOSSES is a comedy I’ve been wanting to see so, you know, I watched it.
