johnlink ranks INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989)

•June 6, 2012 • 1 Comment

Continuing on with this run of the INDIANA JONES series brings us to film number three. This was a reclamation project of sorts for Spielberg, after being disappointed in thew way TEMPLE OF DOOM turned out. This film has Indy reconnecting with his Dad (Sean Connery) and hunting down the holy grail. I wonder how long they considered calling this INDIANA JONES AND THE HOLY GRAIL before realizing they didn’t want to compete with the Monty Python guys…

johnlink ranks INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984)

This is the INDIANA JONES movie which I wasn’t a huge fan of. I remember seeing it as a kid, and finding it less engaging than the first and third. When I revisited the series almost a decade ago, that same feeling hit me. But I wasn’t doing rankings then, right? So it’s time to see how this stacks up.

johnlink ranks RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)

Over 380 rankings into this blog, and I haven’t hit up the INDIANA JONES series yet. As I close in on the big 400, there are some films I want to knock off the list, mostly for the fact that it would mean I have not seen them in the last four years (since I started this project at the beginning of 2009, I have ranked every film I have seen). Digging back into this series, my recollection is that I strongly dislike TEMPLE, really enjoy LAST CRUSADE, and was not a fan of CRYSTAL SKULL. But, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK? Certainly one of the great blockbusters in cinema history. There will be SOME SPOILERS below.

johnlink ranks MINORITY REPORT (2002)

It is hard to believe that it has been ten years since this movie came out. I remember seeing this in theaters and really being sucked into the universe Spielberg created. The future-crime concept, the computer systems, the concepts of travel. All this detail put into creating a world within which this story could unfold. Plus, this came out before everyone realized Tom Cruise is crazy, so it had that going for it.

johnlink ranks THE GOONIES (1985)

PRINCESS BRIDE. GHOST BUSTERS. WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. These were the films of my youth. Then, when I hit middle school age, it was LION KING and ACE VENTURA and CITY SLICKERS. For whatever reason, GOONIES was never there. I think I may have stumbled in on a scene from f it when I was five, and the villainous mama scared the crap out of me to the point that I did not want to see it. I know a lot about the movie. I know the Truffle Shuffle and the treasure map and Sloth. I know Josh Brolin made his debut and Corey Feldman is annoying (though I didn’t know that Joe Pantoliano and his hairpiece were in it). I’ve seen many sections of it, I’ve even seen the climax. But watching it beginning to end? Never happened. Until last night…

johnlink ranks CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (2011)

Working in the theater, I tend to see snippets of many different movies. Over the past couple of years I’ve made an effort to avoid seeing pieces of movies I know I want to watch, but with some movies (especially ones I’m on the fence about) I don’t mind popping in and seeing a random scene. Such was the case with CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. When we had it in the theater I saw one bit, a tender moment when Cal (Steve Carell) is having a conversation with his ex-wife Emily (Julianne Moore). She’s calling to find out how to reignite the pilot, only he knows she’s using that as an excuse to call him. It is a small, smile-inducing, and well-written scene which, in thirty seconds, made me want to see this movie.

johnlink ranks THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1977)

I didn’t come into May expecting to watch one of the original Wes Craven genre flicks from the 70s. I certainly didn’t expect to watch both of them. After I respected, but did not particularly enjoy, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, I stumbled upon THE HILLS HAVE EYES. This one I have seen the remake of, but was not particularly impressed with the effort. So how was the original?

johnlink ranks LIMITLESS (2011)

I’ve heard good things about this unique film which involves a scrubby writer (Bradley Cooper) starting a new medication which allows him to use the full capacity of his brain. That’s a solid premise, but also one which could devolve fairly quickly if not handled well. Plus it has Robert DeNiro who, while still a great actor, needs to fire his agent and hire someone who will do a better job of helping him select his movies.

johnlink ranks ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (2005)

•May 23, 2012 • Leave a Comment

This is the 2005 remake of the cult classic John Carpenter film of the same name from 1976 (which I have not seen). The story concerns a collection of cops and criminals holed up in a police station while being repeatedly attacked from the outside. I was in the mood for something intense, and I remembered this as being so. I do talk briefly about the ending, though it is not some kind of revolutionary surprise, so there are SPOILERS BELOW.

johnlink ranks CASABLANCA (1942)

•May 22, 2012 • 3 Comments

There are several movies which I absolutely love, but just haven’t gotten to for this blog. I can shorten that list by one with this ranking of CASABLANCA. While I don’t pretend he is the best actor of all time, Bogart is, ever-increasingly, my favorite movie star of all time. So we can go ahead and get this ball rolling, remembering that I went into this considering CASABLANCA one of my favorite movies. MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW. But if you haven’t seen this, well… get on it.
