So I totally thought that SAW II was the last in the series that I had seen. But I discovered, while watching the third installment, that I had seen this one too. I think that this was the one that… at the time… made decide I didn’t need to see any of the others. Usually I ask the question: “Does it hold up over time?” Instead, here, I ask: “Is it still so bad?”

•September 26, 2015 • Leave a CommentSo what better way to follow up SAW than with SAW II. That’s logical, right? For the record, these are the only two SAW movies I’ve seen all the way through. I must admit that I watched pieces of several others in my years working at the movie theater, but these first two are the only ones that I can say that I ‘saw’ before.

•September 25, 2015 • Leave a CommentLast year I visited all of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET films in the original order. This year, I figured I would g with SAW in advance of Halloween. I should point out, though, that my wife was fully on board with the Freddy films. She isn’t so much in for SAW, so we will see if I can get through all of them (alone) between now and Halloween. I have faith.

•September 25, 2015 • Leave a CommentWhen my son Quinn was born, and he is five now, I used that as an excuse to gobble up some early Disney films on Blu Ray that I had never seen before. I was sure to have him introduced to the canon before his first birthday, right? Well, it turns out, kids have a mind all their own. I know, it’s a crazy notion. I had mentioned PINOCCHIO (along with SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA) ad nauseam since roughly the time he was two. He never bit. Then, out of nowhere, he announced during dinner tonight “I’d like to have a movie night tonight. And I want to watch PINOCCHIO.” I suppose my slow burn had worked. I’d finally get to watch this movie…
johnlink ranks ERASED (2012)
•September 24, 2015 • Leave a CommentERASED may sound like a movie with a premise equivalent to dozens of other films: A guy has his identity erased by some nefarious entity, and he is fighting back. But I’m a sucker for this kind of movie, and I’ll watch it if it stars someone I like. Aaron Eckhart qualifies.
johnlink ranks THE CELL (2000)
•September 24, 2015 • 1 CommentSometimes, it feels like I’ve seen every thriller made in the late 90s and early 2000s. That is not a brag. That is not even a humblebrag. That is evidence of a youth spent in too many theaters and watching too many movies on VHS. But THE CELL is one I’d never seen. I wasn’t always a huge Vince Vaughan fan (though he has since won me over) and Jennifer Lopez only ever made a movie or two I’d even wanted to see (though she was great in OUT OF SIGHT). So THE CELL was a movie I just never caught, until fifteen years after its release.

•September 21, 2015 • Leave a CommentNot to tip my hand before the article, but when people ask me what my favorite movie is, I always say that I can’t really answer that with one movie, but that a handful is required. In that handful, always, will be GHOSTBUSTERS. It was my first favorite movie as a little kid, and it will always be on my short list.

•September 18, 2015 • Leave a CommentTHE BIG SLEEP is canonical Humphrey Bogart, and it is also one of those few wonderful films we get with Bogart and Bacall. It’s a movie I’ve seen a couple of times, and one that I’ll see many more times in the future.
johnlink ranks INTERSTELLAR (2014)
•September 16, 2015 • 1 CommentChristopher Nolan is one of those guys for whom it feels you need to have their movies in your collection. Some directors make movies, some directors churn out movies, and some directors really OWN their movies. Nolan rarely make minor films, even when he is hitting the comic book circuit. INTERSTELLAR is Nolan’s pace opus, but is it any good?
