johnlink ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (2007)

Here we are, back to the Harry Potter series with film number five. This is the last film in the series which I had not previously ranked, so the next three here in the following month or so will be re-rankings (like you care). Also, ORDER OF THE PHOENIX is the first of those which I have not seen since theaters. The first four I had seen multiple times, but starting with the fifth I just hadn’t caught them since opening day (this one I remember seeing in a theater in LA, at the morning show, with Liz, and tons of young kids. It was actually a thoroughly enjoyable way to see it!).

johnlink ranks EVIL DEAD II (1987)

After watching the first EVIL DEAD (for the first time, surprisingly), I wanted to put in the second one to see the differences and similarities. I know there has always been debate about whether this is a sequel or a remake. Fortunatley, I am happy to end that debate. You are welcome. You can rest easier now, I know. This is a great service to humanity.

johnlink ranks SUPERHEROES (2011)

My first documentary of 2012 is one which seemed to have a pretty cool premise. See, there are people out there, in the real world, who dress up in costume and go out at night to try and stop crime, or generally make the world a better place. Sounds like these people might be crazy. SPOILER ALERT: Many of them are.

johnlink ranks THE EVIL DEAD (1981)

I was under the impression that I had seen this movie until about six or seven minutes in when I realized that I did not recognize anything. I’ve seen ARMY OF DARKNESS at least a dozen times, and EVIL DEAD II a couple of times. I always just assumed I had seen the first one somewhere along the way. Maybe that was exacerbated by the fact that many people say the second film is just a do-over of the first. Anyway…

johnlink ranks CITY SLICKERS (1991)

Objectivity failure alert: I love this movie. Though I haven’t seen it in probably a decade, this was one of my favorite comedies of my early teen years. I must have watched this thing thirty to forty times in high school. For me, the top three Billy Crystal movies are CITY SLICKERS, WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, and MONSTERS INC. Crystal may not have done a ton of movies over his career, but those three are each absolute classics in their respective genre.

Some more Hitchcock! Unlike the two previous entires from the past month, this is a Hitchcock flick which I have not seen before. But it stars a mid-Bond-era Sean Connery and Tippi Hedren. Been meaning to see this for awhile! SOME SPOILERS BELOW

johnlink ranks THE CAINE MUTINY (1954)

When looking at the Bogart filmography, there are really two films on it which I am embarrassed about not seeing. With this viewing of THE CAINE MUTINY, I can knock one of those of the list. Now I just need to hunt down AFRICAN QUEEN. On a side note, this marks the 4th movie I’ve watched from the 50s so far this year, already doubling last year’s total. I’d been meaning to get to a lot of these classics (especially any Bogart or Hitchcock stuff which I have not previously visited for these pages), so I’m glad to see progress there.

johnlink ranks MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1974)

When I finished DEATH WISH I still had another four hours to kill before the Super Bowl. I needed to laugh. I went with Monty Python, not realizing that HOLY GRAIL and DEATH WISH were both 1974 films released in the US within a month of each other. Go figure.

In retrospect, it probably was not a good idea to watch a movie entitled DEATH WISH hours before the Patriots Super Bowl. I may have single-handedly cost them the game by doing so. Alas, my 17 month old son now still has to live in a world where the Patriots have yet to win a Super Bowl in his lifetime. Sigh. I guess it’s time to talk about the movie…

johnlink ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2005)

And we now return to our series of HARRY POTTER reviews. GOBLET OF FIRE is the one I remember as being the most stand-alone plot-wise. It also introduces an international aspect to the story, with both the Quidditch World Cup and the Tri Wizard Tournament. I also vividly remember it as ‘the one where boys start noticing the girls.’
