johnlink ranks KEY LARGO (1948)

We interrupt this series of HARRY POTTER rankings for an old Bogart film. And not just any Bogart film, but a Bogie/Bacall film with Lionel Barrymore in a solid role, and Edward G. Robinson as the heavy! I saw this about a decade ago, and could instantly recall the premise (some gangsters and some ‘good’ people stuck in a hotel together during a hurricane), but the details had mostly faded. I do remember very much liking it though, so it was time to see it again.

johnlink ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (2002)

•January 8, 2012 • 1 Comment

Continuing on with the Harry Potter series, is film number two. For whatever reason, this one I feel as though I’ve seen less than the third and fourth. Or maybe it just doesn’t stick to your bones the same as the third and fourth. Either way, off we go…

johnlink ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE (2001)

In my end of 2011 review, I mentioned that I wanted to get at some series which I had not ranked. With our new Harry Potter Blu Rays in hand (thanks John!), Liz and I decided to watch that group of films first. It’s not hard to convince Liz of this, since she has seen all the HP movies dozens of times. Anyway, I have the last few movies on these pages from seeing them in theaters, but hadn’t seen the first bunch in awhile.

johnlink ranks MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL (2011)

•January 4, 2012 • 1 Comment

Usually by the time a movie has reached its fourth installment, the proceedings have become tedious. All reports were that the fourth MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film had avoided this trap, with more than a few critics landing it a spot on their best of 2011 list. Liz and I finally found a night out, hit up the movies, and decided to see what many people were calling an intense blockbuster experience.

johnlink ranks GROUNDHOG DAY (1993)

I decided to start off 2012 with a movie I know I love, but which I have not seen in way too long. One of Bill Murray’s few romantic comedies, this is an Egon directed delight which is one of those movies which nobody really talks about, but everyone loves. Happy 2012, let’s get to it!

johnlink’s 2011 movie review

This is my third complete year ranking movies. It’s been a blast thus far, and I hope to continue to do it for many years to come. Hit the 300 movie milestone this year. Doing 300 movie reviews is much more entertaining than watching the movie 300. But, well, that’s just a cheap shot. Anyway, here we go…

johnlink ranks THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (2002)

•December 31, 2011 • Leave a Comment

This is a movie I think of as an old stand by. I’ve seen it a few times, and it is thoroughly entertaining. This, unless something completely strange happens here on New Year’s Eve, is my last film of 2011. I figured I would go out on a fun note.

johnlink’s official (and NEWLY UPDATED) top 20/20

•December 31, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Here are my brandy new rankings for Top 20 Films and Top 20 Movies of all time. These are incomplete, in that they only include films I have actually watched since starting this ranking project at the beginning of 2009. The FILM categorization is for quality of film on a thematic, visual, and technical standpoint. The MOVIE categorization is pure fun-factor. In both cases, a ranking can be influenced, however slightly, by its counterpart. For example, The Usual Suspects appears so high on each list because, for me the filmmaking and the fun of it go hand-in-hand.

johnlink ranks BAG OF BONES (2011)

Usually, I don’t get into the business of ranking television movies. For the most part, that is because I avoid television movies (HBO doesn’t count, in my opinion). But this is one of my all time favorite novels, one which I always thought would lend itself to a filmed adaptation. And when they got Pierce Brosnan to assume the role of widower Mike Noonan, I had mildly high expectations that this could be done very well.

johnlink ranks THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (2011)

•December 29, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Though I haven’t read much Philip K. Dick, I am a fan of many of his movie inspired works. Particularly the films BLADE RUNNER, MINORITY REPORT, and (to a lesser extent) TOTAL RECALL. I found NEXT to be entertaining but not extraordinary, and PAYCHECK to be slightly less entertaining and much less extraordinary. If you are going into a film based on a Dick story you now (or at least hope) that you are in for some heady, noirish sci-fi. I was excited to finally get to THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU.
