I started this movie not knowing if I had seen it or not. I’ve viewed most of the 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger library over the years, and this title seemed familiar. As I began it, however, I realized that this was a new one for me.
johnlink ranks UNKNOWN (2006)
•November 10, 2010 • Leave a CommentAs I sit on the couch holding Quinn, I often browse through the Cox guide and see what is playing that week on the HBO Hi-Def channels as well as IFCHD and TCM. I’ll DVR about seven or eight movies a week, of which I may watch two or three. UNKNOWN came across HBO. It’s a film I had never heard of. But the cast and description caught me, so I thought I would give it a go.
johnlink ranks THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN (2008)
•November 10, 2010 • Leave a CommentThis documentary would not have been even remotely on my radar a couple of years ago. But with Liz choosing a medication-free birth, it was a title I had heard about from several people. It was brought up by a friend recently, and Liz happened to see it on the library shelf the very next day. So, it became movie number 201 in this series!

johnlink ranks THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987)
•November 9, 2010 • 2 CommentsWhat better way to celebrate my 200th ranking than with the film that may be my favorite and most watched of all time. There’s plenty to say about this movie. I hadn’t watched it in a couple of years, and was worried when someone recently told me that it hadn’t aged well. They were wrong. It’s aged beautifully, especially as the digital transfers continue to improve the in-home picture and sound. So… YEAH #200! Let’s do this!
johnlink ranks THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1947)
•November 8, 2010 • Leave a CommentI’m a fan of Orson Welles, though I am not as well-versed in his films as I would like to be. THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI is a movie which combines the Wellesian filming he is so iconic for with the noir style that was popular in Hollywood at the time. Add in his then-wife Rita Hayworth (she of Andy’s wall in SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) who is an actress I’ve somehow never seen on film before, and this is a movie I was excited to finally get to.

johnlink ranks CAST AWAY (2000)
•November 5, 2010 • Leave a CommentWhile perhaps not equivalent to SCARFACE or THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY on my embarrassing-that-I-haven’t-seen-it scale, it is still surprising that it took me ten years to see CAST AWAY (surprising, in no small part, due to the fact that I saw almost every major release that came out my last couple years of high school). But it falls off the list now. There are some SPOILERS below. But, if you are like me, most of this movie is ingrained enough in pop-culture to hold no real surprises.
johnlink ranks I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997)
•November 1, 2010 • Leave a CommentThis is another title which was a big part of my high school life. I was a huge fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt from her PARTY OF FIVE days, and a huge fan of Kevin Williamson from all his 90s endeavors. So while I would never consider this a classic by any stretch, it is fitting that I give it a watch as we head towards 200 movies reviewed (this, is number 197).

johnlink ranks FAST FOOD NATION (2006)
•October 31, 2010 • Leave a CommentThis was the companion piece to FOOD INC. , both of which contain producing credits for Eric Schlosser. FAST FOOD NATION is cowritten by Schlosser and each film deals with the topic of where our food comes from. While FOOD, INC. is a documentary which seeks to enhance knowledge about the topic, FAST FOOD NATION is a drama, written to showcase the sort of people who are effected every day by the big conglomerate food companies. Some SPOILERS are contained within this review.
johnlink ranks THE STING (1973)
•October 22, 2010 • Leave a CommentHere’s a movie which has been on my radar for a long time, and which I’m embarrassed to say I hadn’t seen. It certainly is well qualified to be on my march to 200 reviews (unlike that last piece of crap I reviewed, which was unfortunate) and I’m happy I finally got to it. There will be some light SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP, but know that this gets a big recommend from me.
johnlink ranks STANDING STILL (2005)
•October 17, 2010 • Leave a CommentIt should be a red flag when a film stars Amy Adams, Ethan Embry, Colin Hanks, Xander Berkeley, Mena Suvari, Pyro, and Dawson Leery, yet I’ve never heard of it. But this film came acrosss HBOHD, and I was intrigued enough by the cast, each of which has done some real solid work. It had to at least be mildly entertaining, right?
