johnlink ranks PERFECT STRANGER (2007)

I have mixed feelings about Halle Berry. While I certainly think she has proven herself a powerful actress in films like MONSTER’S BALL, I also can never remember the time she prostituted herself out at the MTV movie awards years ago. She stood on the stage, next to Travolta and Jackman, pointed at her tits and said something along the lines of “If you want to see these, go to the theaters and watch SWORDFISH.” It was lame. It lacked subtlety. Kate Winslet is much more subtle. She gets naked in everything she does, so she just makes you assume that anything she is in allows you to see her naked. But I digress…

johnlink ranks SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)

This movie has been in the back of my mind since seeing the coverage of the 65th Anniversary of D-Day on CNN. I had not seen SAVING PRIVATE RYAN in at least five years, but there were still several moments from that opening battle sequence which were embedded in my psyche. I suppose that is one of the greatest complements you can give a film, saying that it is still fresh in your mind years later.

johnlink ranks TRANSFORMERS 2: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN (2009)

As much as I’ve been knocking TRANSFORMERS 2 when talking with people, I have always done so with the caveat that I have yet to actually see it. I’d been intending to, sort of the way people go to NASCAR more for the crashes than the race. So when I went in to work to pick up my schedule, my wife and I decided to stick around and see the movie everyone was talking about.

Didn’t plan it this way, but I watched another Jim Carrey movie. This one was more because it was 1 AM and we had an 80 minute movie on the HDDVR. I had mild interest in this one, and was hoping to be overwhelmed with kiddy happiness!

johnlink ranks YES MAN (2008)

Anybody who has followed my movie rankings (all 0.5 of you) know I love Jim Carrey. Lately his comedies have been mediocre, and even his dramas have had some misses. But I still think he’s one of the most talented comedians out there, and was happy to finally get a chance to watch YES MAN at movie night.

johnlink ranks TRANSFORMERS (2007)

I’m not the Michael Bay hater that some are. There will always be a place on my shelf for BAD BOYS and THE ROCK. I did like ARMAGEDDON (which is hard to admit in public) but admittedly have not seen it in years. I have not seen PEARL HARBOR, but my preconception is that the historical nature of the film wouldn’t mesh well with his blow-em-up style. BAD BOYS II is sub par, but fun. And, THE ISLAND is an entertaining enough sci-fi film with plenty of flaws. So it is those movies, then TRANSFORMERS and that is it. That’s the list until the TRANSFORMERS sequel comes out tomorrow. The list isn’t the sacrilege some people seem to suggest.

johnlink ranks ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST (1975)

I recently realized that movie night at the Lincoln house started seven years ago. It started with my near-Uncle Paul telling me about the epics I needed to see, and with me agreeing that I was lacking in certain cinematic knowledge. So, it began that he, my dad, and I would watch movies on Thursday nights. We started with BEN HUR and TEN COMMANDMENTS and EL CID. Soon, Liz and John were added to our roster, along with whatever friends happened to be around that week (at least thirty people have participated at one time or another, with out highest total for one week being twelve). As the years went by, and as Paul could no longer attend, movie night became more about seeing newer movies we had missed, with the occasional classic. Liz and I were on our honeymoon, and movie night came up in conversation. We talked about how we should, along with newer films, be mixing in more of the older stuff that some of us never seen. The regular attendees were now her, myself, John, and my Dad with my mom watching approximately half of them, and some other friends making it intermittently.  The following week, as luck would have it, John and I had a conversation about Robert Parish, and I mentioned the nomenclature of his nickname, The Chief. This led to John telling me he hadn’t seen CUCKOO’S NEST, and the first movie night of what felt like a new era (since Liz and I hadn’t made it in a month plus due to wedding commitments) was decided there!

johnlink ranks HANCOCK (2008)

HANCOCK could have been a really good movie. It has script issues, focus issues, and studio issues. All these problems stem from a fear of being too dark. It’s like it is afraid of making Will Smith look TOO bad. I don’t blame him for that, I blame the production en masse. What we ended up getting, instead of a dark and gritty graphic novel tale, was a soft summer blockbuster which entertained at times, but ultimately fell short.

johnlink ranks UP (2009)

Just went on a whim and saw the last show of the night for UP in 3D. I went in a little unsure of what to expect. I purposely avoided seeing too much about the movie in advance, knowing that this strategy enhanced my first viewing of WALL-E. I know that I will enjoy a Pixar movie without fail. I figure the less I know the better.

johnlink ranks THE HANGOVER (2009)

I’ve never been to Vegas. I’m probably alive only because I never went on a trip to Vegas during my daredevil college years. A lot of my good buddies go regularly, but I never got out there. But I intend to. And when I do, I hope it’s a little like THE HANGOVER, but not too much…
