johnlink ranks MR. & MRS. SMITH (2005)

This is one of my guilty pleasure films (and it is the one movie I can guarantee that Jennifer Aniston does not own). I know it’s a summer blockbuster and I should see right through its mindlessness. Only the problem is… I can’t. For fun action/comedy, it rarely gets better than Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been keeping the synopsis sections of these rankings brief. This is easy to do here too. Mr. & Mrs. Smith have a dull marriage except for the one secret they keep from each other. They are both assassins. When their secrets are revealed, chaos ensues.

I watched Mr. & MRS. SMITH (2005) on 1.5.09, it was my third time seeing it.

NOTE: THIS RANKING UTILIZES THIS SITE’S ORIGINAL SYSTEMIC ARTICLE WRITING METHOD. THE METHOD BY WHICH THE RANKINGS WERE ARRIVED AT, HOWEVER, REMAINS THE SAME.

FILM

Certainly not a landmark technical achievment. However, the themes are what up the score here a bit. The marriage is not secondary to the action, but makes us care about the action. A bad movie does it the other way around. SCORE: 6

MOVIE

Doesn’t get much better for fun. I’d give it a perfect score except for the two moments that take me out of the story everytime. One is the thirty story drop by Angelina Jolie, the other is the random ATV with an attached chain gun in a Home store. SCORE: 9

ACTING

I know this isn’t The Shawshank Redemption. But ask an actor… you can’t fake funny, and you can’t fake chemistry. This movie has plenty of both. Jolie and Pitt are perfect. SCORE: 8

WRITING

The one-liners are great. The, surprises frequent. As far as blockbusters go, its pretty good. Still, I can’t say it’s a script that will blow anyone away. SCORE: 6

FINAL TALLY

FILM: 6; MOVIE: 9; ACTING: 8; WRITING: 6

6+9+8+6+0 = 29

FINAL SCORE: 7.25

  1. This is a really underrated movie. No it’s not brilliant, but it’s definitely not a mindless summer movie either. And I agree, it’s a lot of fun to watch.

  2. That math again!

  3. I agree, very good movie. I was reluctant to watch it at first but I can’t deny how much fun it is once you get into it. I love the guns locker in the oven… I want one and it’ll finally give my oven a reason to exist!

  4. Wow, John can’t add and my grammar sucks. Right perfect couple we make 🙂
