johnlink ranks THE TRANSPORTER (2002)

I know that, as a male between the ages of 13 and 39, I am contractually obligated to be in love with Luc Besson. He nailed a few early ones with LA FEMME NIKITA and THE PROFESSIONAL, and so I am supposed to give him a pass for life and think that everything he does is uber-cool. Unfortunately, I don’t. I’m not the FIFTH ELEMENT supporter that my fiancee wife is, and I never really sought out his other action enterprises. But I remember finding THE TRANSPORTER to be entertaining. I was in the mood for something like that, so I threw it on.

THE TRANSPORTER tells the story of a professional driver who is betrayed by the people he is doing a job for. A girl gets involved, and then a lot of asses get kicked.

I watched THE TRANSPORTER (2002) on 4.22.09. It was my second viewing of the film.

NOTE: THIS RANKING UTILIZES THIS SITE’S ORIGINAL SYSTEMIC ARTICLE WRITING METHOD. THE METHOD BY WHICH THE RANKINGS WERE ARRIVED AT, HOWEVER, REMAINS THE SAME.

FILM

I saw a couple minutes of CRANK 2 in the theater the other day, and (while I’m not endorsing it at that point) I saw more interesting filmic choices in five minutes of that movie then I did in all of TRANSPORTER. I’m not saying CRANK 2 is high art, just that THE TRANSPORTER is paint by numbers. The car chases are fine, but in this post-BOURNE world, they feel like choreographed pieces of showmanship rather than anything gritty or dangerous. Ditto the fighting. It was more about trying to be cool than actually being cool. And the love theme… holy shit does the score suck. Which is too bad, because some of the techno styled stuff is the right tone. Should have used it throughout, and I am no techno fan. SCORE: 3

MOVIE

Not nearly as entertaining as I remembered. Found myself bored by the end. I’m not sure if I lied to myself and wasn’t in the mood for action, or what. But I can’t consider this something worthy of repeat viewing. Maybe if I had seen it when I was younger I would have a better impression of it. I still love BAD BOYS (or I think I do, haven’t seen it in awhile) but I think that’s because it brings me back to being thirteen years old. SCORE: 4

ACTING

I actually like Jason Statham a lot. He’s arguably the best action star out there right now. He is a guy who can carry a movie, and he has enough to keep this one moving forward. But the supporting cast in this is terrible. Laughably terrible. Painfully terrible. Having trouble understanding why they were cast terrible. SCORE: 3

WRITING

There is a plot. People do things. They fight and screw each other. Someone makes a decision to stand up and fight rather than run away from commitment. Blah, blah, blah. Uninspired. I would love Luc Besson if he kept doing things the caliber of THE PROFESSIONAL. That film had depth and soul underneath all the violence. I’m just not seeing that from him anymore. SCORE: 4

FINAL TALLY

FILM: 3; MOVIE: 4; ACTING: 3; WRITING: 4

3+4+3+4+0=14

FINAL SCORE: 3.5
