johnlink ranks DEATH AT A FUNERAL (2007)

For the first time in the long, storied history of movie night my mother actually picked a movie. She is the ultimate ‘whatever you guys want to watch’ person, so it was quite the surprise. She had seen the British DEATH AT A FUNERAL on Showtime and wanted to share.

DEATH AT A FUNERAL is the story of a British family coming together at the old homestead for the funeral of the patriarch.

I watched DEATH AT A FUNERAL (2007) at movie night on 7.16.09. It was my first viewing of the film.

NOTE: THIS RANKING UTILIZES THIS SITE’S ORIGINAL SYSTEMIC ARTICLE WRITING METHOD. THE METHOD BY WHICH THE RANKINGS WERE ARRIVED AT, HOWEVER, REMAINS THE SAME.

FILM

Typical of a Frank Oz directed film, this movie is fun, light, and enjoyable. It has a little bit of thematic fluff about stepping out of a familial shadow. But really, this is just a small and enjoyable British comedy. SCORE: 4

MOVIE

A great prologue introduces the sort of comedy we are about to get into. There is plenty of hilarity to go around with the major thrusts being a young man, who wants to impress his soon to be father-in-law, accidentally taking hallucinogens and a little person with a big secret. Very funny stuff, though it does end abruptly. SCORE: 7

ACTING

Funny and grounded performances from all players, especially the drugged up Alan Tudyk (FIREFLY) and the secretive PETER DINKLAGE (CHRONICLES OF NARNIA). The family is solid, and there is no weak link in the bunch. SCORE: 6

WRITING

The story spins and spins and ultimately doesn’t have any place to go. A sentimental monologue at the end is supposed to calm all the tension, but the situations have gotten so extreme that I just didn’t quite believe it. But everything is so well paced leading up to this ending that I can’t complain too loudly. Better to have a slightly unbelievable quick ending than a long dragged out and unfunny conclusion to a zany little film. SCORE: 5

FINAL TALLY:

FILM: 4; MOVIE: 7; ACTING: 6; WRITING: 5

4+7+6+5+0= 22

FINAL SCORE: 5.5
