johnlink ranks WAKKO’S WISH (1999)
So, a day after making a declaration that I would watch the classics, I found an Animaniacs movie on HBO. So… yeah. I watched it.
I watched WAKKO’S WISH (1999) on 9.2.09. It was my first viewing of the film.
NOTE: THIS RANKING UTILIZES THIS SITE’S ORIGINAL SYSTEMIC ARTICLE WRITING METHOD. THE METHOD BY WHICH THE RANKINGS WERE ARRIVED AT, HOWEVER, REMAINS THE SAME.
FILM
I loved Animaniacs as a kid. They were subversive and clever. They were the precursors for shows like Family Guy: Self-aware and self-deprecating. The first scene of the movie starts that way, with a CITIZEN KANE reference, but it doesn’t really hold up. There is certainly a condemnation of taxation and suppression of the regular person, but it is more an elongated show segment than a stand alone movie. SCORE: 3
MOVIE
The songs become tedious, and the jokes not as plentiful. There is definitely a fun factor in seeing all the old characters in a movie, but not enough to sustain the length of the whole movie. SCORE: 4
ACTING
As always, this represents the characterization in the animation as much as the voice work. The movie is basically filmed like a show, and the show was always effective in this area. The work is well done, and I found myself laughing more than I might have in a movie this poor. SCORE: 6
WRITING
I have a hard time believing that this is the best the Animaniacs team could do. I would have expected something more grand. We get some decent jokes, but this feels every bit like the straight-to-video movie that it was. SCORE: 3
