johnlink ranks HOLLOW MAN II (2006)
Yep. I really watched HOLLOW MAN II. What’s funny, is I think the first one is bad enough. But FearNetHD came calling for the first time in a long while, and there we were, late at night, watching a straight to DVD ‘horror’ film. What the heck, the world wouldn’t be the same without the low men on the totem pole, right?
I watched HOLLOW MAN II (2006) on 8.17.10. It was my first viewing of the film. TRAILER HERE
Didn’t really expect anything from this one. I was mildly intrigued that it costarred Christian Slater and Peter Facinelli. Neither of them, however, really gave much. In fact, this was probably Slater’s easiest paycheck ever. With two scenes totaling maybe 45 seconds, preceded by a day’s worth of voice over, he didn’t really have to stretch to play the title character here.
The script and story feel lame, and direct to DVD. While sometimes sequels feel like they were an original script morphed into a franchise piece, this feels like it wanted to be the Hollow Man sequel. It just didn’t have anything new to bring. If you’re going to be a horror movie, you’d like to have more than two or three scenes of mild suspense inter-cut with a whole lot of talking. The ratio of dialogue as compared to things you learn about a character sucks in this film.
It has a couple moments. The opening is actually promising, though it never gets any better. A scene with another Hollow Man is not too bad. But there isn’t enough here to warrant attention.
Oh, and this film has one of the worst scenes of blatantly gratuitous nudity I’ve ever seen. It’s a huge stretch to get someone naked in this thing, but they manage to do it. I guess they are following in the Verhoeven footsteps after all.
SCORES
FILM: 2; MOVIE: 5; ACTING: 4; WRITING: 3; BONUS: -1 (What is this?)
This film is so dark in some scenes that it is almost unwatchable. Just poor, poor lighting making the night time scenes hard to follow.

FINAL SCORE: 3.25 (Yep, still better than THE FINAL DESTINATION)
