johnlink re-ranks THE PRESTIGE (2006)

•November 24, 2014 • 7 Comments

THE PRESTIGE is a movie you really do need to see twice. The first time for the plot, the second time for the method. This is the second time I’ve seen the movie, so I’m going to spend a good time talking about this movie in a way which would ruin it if you haven’t seen it. Sorry. SPOILERS BELOW!! If you have not had a chance to see THE PRESTIGE, you should. It is a worthwhile movie for sure.

johnlink ranks SAVAGES (2012)

It’s been probably a month and half since I watched a movie with some kind of pedigree. Probably CAPTAIN PHILLIPS in the beginning of October, though I could be missing something. I needed to watch something with character, decent writing, and an interesting story arc. This was Oliver Stone’s drug/revenge opus, and it was something I wanted to see for sure.

johnlink ranks THE CORRUPTED (2010)

It was way too late to start a movie, but I wasn’t quite tired. When that happens, I find a short movie on Amazon Prime and see if it keeps me awake. This is an exercise in masochism often times. Anyway, I stumbled across a movie called THE CORRUPTED, which seemed to be some kind of invasion of the body snatchers type thing.

johnlink ranks PARKLAND (2013)

Stumbled on this movie, quite by accident, just as it was starting up. I had no idea what PARKLAND was, and certainly no notion that it might pertain to the JFK assassination. But, having seen it, I’m glad that I did.

johnlink ranks REASONABLE DOUBT (2014)

Desperately needed a break from the horror genre. Stumbled across this film, REASONABLE DOUBT, which sounded like a half-decent thriller about a guy who feels guilty about a hit-and-run. To be honest, I’ll give any thriller a shot even if it sounds terrible.

johnlink re-ranks SCREAM (1996)

•November 5, 2014 • 6 Comments

I thought I was pretty much done with horror movies for awhile, lest this site became another horror-focused thing. I’m sure I’ll get back to normal soon enough, but we decided to watch SCREAM last night, probably because it felt like a good follow up to all those NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET FILMS.

johnlink ranks THE FOG (1980)

Usually, my October horror movie watching gears to newer stuff I haven’t seen. This year, while I still watched a whole ton of stuff which was new to me, I dug much further into the past. I went back to the 30s for THE VAMPIRE BAT, the 40s for the terrible APE MAN, the 50s for the Japanese film Ghost of Yotsuya, the 80s and 90s for the entire NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and the early 21st century for SIGNS. With one last night before Halloween, I tackled another classic I had never been exposed to: THE FOG.

I try to watch all kinds of horror movies around Halloween, even movies which probably don’t qualify as modern horror. This B Movie showed up on TV, and it seemed like a good way to spend an hour plus.

johnlink ranks WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE (1994)

•October 25, 2014 • 5 Comments

I hate when a Director puts their name in a title and then we have to decide if that is part of the title or not. It’s less annoying when a group does it, say National Lampoon or Monty Python, only because there seems to be an identifying marker that comes with naming the group (not that National Lampoon means anything anymore). But seeing Wes Craven’s name in the title for NEW NIGHTMARE always irritated me. After seeing the movie, though, it makes sense. For once it works to have the title include the Director because the plot of this movie actually involves Wes Craven having nightmares about Freddy Krueger and writing a script about it. So, people of Earth, go ahead and feel free to officially refer to this one as WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE. You have my blessing.

johnlink ranks FREDDY’S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE (1991)

Coming to the home stretch as it pertains to A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. One supposedly bad movie in the sixth, and one supposedly decent movie with the seventh left. Can’t watch the good ones without also getting through the weaker ones, so six got watched (despite my better judgment). I stayed up. My wife was out within forty minutes. She’s a wimp. Or maybe she’s just smarter than me.
