johnlink ranks THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001)

•January 10, 2014 • 2 Comments

After finally getting at the first two HOBBITS, my wife and I decided to stick around Middle Earth long enough to revisit the originals. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen this, so it’s nice to see how they stand up after deriding the special effects of the new trilogy. For the record, this ranking considers the extended edition of FELLOWSHIP.

johnlink ranks DUMBO (1941)

•January 7, 2014 • Leave a Comment

My son, Quinn, picked DUMBO out from the library. So, we watched it. I imagine there will be plenty of animated kids movies on the blog this year thanks to him. Hopefully at least a good portion of them have the pedigree of this Disney classic. I’m counting this as a first viewing because I may have seen this when I was three (like Quinn!) but I remember absolutely nothing about it whatsoever. I say this only, dear reader, because I know you care desperately about such OCD driven minutiae.

johnlink ranks OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (2013)

•January 7, 2014 • 4 Comments

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN was a minor release most notable for being thought of as second fiddle to the similarly themed WHITE HOUSE DOWN. Morgan Freeman stars in OLYMPUS. So it’s sort of like when he made DEEP IMPACT just as the mega budget ARMAGEDDON was getting set to come out. Moral of the story? Oh. Wait. There is no moral. Right. Ok, so… here’s a review.

johnlink ranks TOTAL RECALL (2012)

•January 6, 2014 • Leave a Comment

I have heard plenty of bad things about the TOTAL RECALL from 2012, mostly from people who cherish the first. I barely remember the Paul Verhoeven original, save for the Sharon Stone/Arnie fight, the woman Arnie dressed up as, and the three-boob chick. I don’t have a great reverence for the first, so I went into the remake knowing nothing about it and trying to temper my expectations. Some MILD SPOILERS below.

johnlink ranks THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG (2013)

•January 5, 2014 • 4 Comments

Exactly a week after being underwhelmed by the initial HOBBIT offering in Peter Jackson’s series, I got into the theater to see number two. My expectations were tempered by the mediocre first film, though I secretly sat down in the theater thinking there was no reason this couldn’t be on par with the original LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. So how was it?

johnlink ranks THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR (1999)

•January 4, 2014 • 2 Comments

THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR is one of those movies I think of as being pretty good, I’ve seen it a couple of times, and I can usually remember almost nothing about it. There’s a place in the world for forgettable science fiction entertainment, and this is it. I mean, not to give away the conclusion of the article before I start or anything. Crap. Anyway… here it is…

johnlink ranks INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009)

•January 3, 2014 • Leave a Comment

Coincidentally, I finally saw INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS on the same day that I noticed Silver Screen Serenade is running a nicely conceptualized Resolution blogathon with writers volunteering to write articles on movies perceived to be great that they have yet to see. I considered doing this INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS article for that series, but can you be truly embarrassed to not have seen a movie that is less than five years old? I figure that has to be saved for something truly embarrassing (like, for me, WIZARD OF OZ or SCARFACE). Anyway, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a movie I’ve long needed to see, if only because Tarantino was the person who first got me interested in film back when I was a young lad digesting PULP FICTION and RESERVOIR DOGS. I finally did, and here is what I thought…

johnlink’s 2013 in review

•January 1, 2014 • Leave a Comment

Well, what do you know. I have completed 5 years of writing reviews for every single movie I have seen. That means that over 600 movie articles now appear on this site. Hopefully, I can keep it rolling. Here are my thoughts on my year in watching movies, while also including some raw data for my fellow math nerds at the end of the article. Happy 2014 everyone!

johnlink ranks PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)

•January 1, 2014 • 7 Comments

My wife and I had to decide what to watch to kill a few hours before the ball dropped on the end of 2013 (or the beginning of 2014, I suppose, depending on your perspective). We decided to go with an old stand by and revisit the Caribbean.

johnlink ranks THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY (2012)

•December 28, 2013 • 8 Comments

As I’ve stated plenty of times, I’m about a year behind on my movie watching. So, as others are digesting THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, I’m finally getting to the first HOBBIT movie. Hopefully it won’t be a full year until I see the next one!
