This game of blogger’s tag has been spreading throughout the movie blogging community like a pesky case of herpes. I caught mine from the prolific Tyson Carter over at the wonderful HEAD IN A VICE. Now that I’m tagged, I have to do some stuff and ask other bloggers do some stuff too. Sounds fun! Go ahead and make the jump…
johnlink ranks CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954)
•February 22, 2013 • Leave a CommentI’ve been knocking these sci-fi/horror classics off my list slowly but surely. I don’t always love them, but there is a certain aura around them which makes folks nostalgic for simpler days (or something). CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON is, from what I have heard, widely considered a classic. That’s usually enough for me to give something a shot.

johnlink ranks WHAT ABOUT BOB? (1991)
•February 19, 2013 • Leave a CommentHere is yet another movie I know very well from multiple viewings as a kid. I haven’t seen this in a decade or so, and it is always nice to revisit a movie which was squarely in the center of Bill Murray’s wheelhouse. You really can’t go wrong when Murray is at his best.
johnlink ranks THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (1999)
•February 18, 2013 • 3 CommentsI thought I had seen all four of the Bond movies starring Pierce Brosnan. It was evident, fairly quickly, that I had never seen this one. I like Brosnan’s Bond, though the excesses of the series by the beginning of the 21st century had just gotten so large that they had to go back and start from scratch with Daniel Craig. I’m glad they made that choice, though I’d never seen any particularly Bond movie that I did not at least enjoy. Until now…

johnlink ranks THE NARROW MARGIN (1952)
•February 15, 2013 • Leave a CommentDespite my affinity for film noir, there is precious little of it littering these pages. THE NARROW MARGIN is another of the films I heard as being one of the classics of the genre, but I had never been exposed to it. Fortunately, thanks to the Oscar month on Turner Classic Movies, I happened upon it recently. So, here we go…
johnlink introduces a new project: TAKE 5
•February 13, 2013 • 2 CommentsIn an effort to expand a little bit beyond just reviews, I’ve already added a reoccurring feature this year called FILM 101. Now, I’d like to do something more. I’m greedy like that. And with that grand intro, I am announcing the start of TAKE 5.
I’ll come up with a topic, and I’m looking for five things to fulfill it in no particular order. Sometimes the topic will be simple like ‘5 best DeNiro films’ or ‘5 best comedies’. Sometimes it will be things like ‘5 movies you love, which others hate’ or ‘5 least favorite actors’. I’m open to suggestions.
The first one: I will TAKE 5 movies you are embarrassed you haven’t seen.
Again, no particular order. No particular rules. Feel free to elaborate on your answers, or not. You can put the list on the comment below or on the Marked Movies announcement on Facebook. Though to make it more of a surprise (and to consolidate any conversation) it would probably be best if you can email me at johnlink00@gmail.com.
Thanks!
John Lincoln
johnlink ranks LAKE PLACID (1999)
•February 11, 2013 • 14 CommentsI remember seeing this in theaters and thinking it was fairly funny and entertaining. I haven’t seen it in the 14 years since, so all I really remember about it was that it had a giant crocodile and Oliver Platt and that it was played for laughs. The horror-comedy genre has more hits than misses, so the fact that I remembered this as good warranted a revisit.
johnlink ranks HANNA (2011)
•February 7, 2013 • 2 CommentsThere was a point half-way through this film where I popped up IMDB on my phone to see from where I recognized an actor. When I landed on the page for HANNA, I saw that the film was rated PG-13. I thought that it must be a mistake. Turns out it is not. This is one of the toughest and most brutal PG-13 movies I’ve seen, both in violence and in theme. With some of the stuff that I know films have had to cut to avoid an R rating, it’s amazing that this film got through. Not that it matters (which is why I’m talking about this up here rather than in the article proper), but it is an interesting side-note.
johnlink ranks RAMBO (2008)
•February 6, 2013 • 6 CommentsI had not even thought about the Rambo series in years. When I threw on FIRST BLOOD a little over a week ago, it was purely on a whim. I just finished the series, seeing the fourth installment for the first time. I had heard, surprisingly, some encouraging things about this movie. I found myself actually getting a little bit excited to see this, which came as a total surprise to me.
FILM 101: Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound
•February 3, 2013 • 3 CommentsIn my first installment of Film 101, I discussed Three Act Structure as it pertains to film. Here, in the second installment, I will talk about the difference between Diegetic Sound and Non-Diegetic Sound. I am reassured that this is fairly obscure language if only because WordPress keeps insisting that I am not spelling it correctly.
