On a particularly lazy day, one in which a battery recharge was needed, I followed up Pixar’s BRAVE with a light popcorn flick called IN TIME. I held a hate-on for Justin Timberlake for no good reason other than his youthful connection to ‘N Sync. What a terrible era of music that was. He started to win me back with good turns on SNL and by seeming to be a decent human being. I was fully turned when I saw his wonderful performance in THE SOCIAL NETWORK. And now I am a Justin Timberlake fan. If 2012 me told 1999 me that I had become a JT fan, 1999 me would punch 2012 me in the face and ask questions later. 1999 me was an angry person.
johnlink ranks BRAVE (2012)
•July 15, 2012 • Leave a CommentIt’s surprising that it has taken me this long into the year to rank my first animated film. I am usually good for several a year. But BRAVE is a film I wanted to see in the theater. This was a unique story for Pixar to tackle, and my curiosity level was very high going in.
johnlink ranks THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)
•July 14, 2012 • 1 CommentI can’t believe that I have not seen this since it hit theaters. I remember what everyone else does: It’s amazing. Heath Ledger is incredible. The action is extraordinarily shot. Christopher Nolan knows how to make a super hero movie. Batman’s voice is really odd. But all 2.4 people who read this blog on a regular basis want their ranking, right? So here it is…
johnlink ranks LOVE & OTHER DRUGS (2010)
•July 11, 2012 • Leave a CommentDirector Edward Zwick doesn’t really dabble in lighthearted stories. His filmography includes GLORY, LEGENDS OF THE FALL, COURAGE UNDER FIRE, THE LAST SAMURAI, and BLOOD DIAMOND. In fact, before LOVE & OTHER DRUGS, Zwick’s last foray into romantic comedy for a feature film was his very first theatrical release: ABOUT LAST NIGHT. It’s safe to say, then, that this is not a typical mindless rom-com. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, this is more character driven dramedy than high concept comedy. The film is better for it.
johnlink bundles his INDIANA JONES rankings
•July 10, 2012 • Leave a CommentOne of the great movie themes of all time, one of the great iconic characters of all time, one of the great blockbuster joys of all time (well except for the second one, and… well… the most recent entry). INDIANA JONES is an odd series to consider. While there is no doubt that RAIDERS is an all time classic, the series is never able to really live up to the original. CRUSADE comes close, but that’s about it. Anyway, that is my thesis. Here is my supporting information…

johnlink ranks HIGH SIERRA (1941)
•July 8, 2012 • Leave a CommentReleased in 1941, HIGH SIERRA is the last film in which Humphrey Bogart did not receive top billing. Though he was clearly the star of the picture, that honor went to female co-conspirator Ida Lupino. Released in the same year as MALTESE FALCON (though a full ten months before), HIGH SIERRA is an end of an era for Bogart, as he was (mostly) done playing criminals after this. The sympathetic story of a guy who gets out of prison and jumps right back into armed robbery, this is certainly a great vehicle for an actor at this particular point in his career.
johnlink re-ranks BATMAN BEGINS (2005)
•July 7, 2012 • 4 CommentsWith Christopher Nolan’s landmark trilogy concluding soon, I wanted to see the first two installments again. I’ve ranked the first film once, though it was back when I was in the infant stages of this blog and utilizing a more systemic method. I have never gotten to the second film for these pages (I haven’t seen THE DARK KNIGHT since it was in theaters), so I am definitely looking forward to doing so. Since this is a re-ranking, just a reminder that I do go back and look at my original article, but I don’t look at the scores as a way of trying not to match or contradict what I’ve previously put on record. Each viewing of a film brings with it a new perspective, so it is not a surprise at all if some scores change.
johnlink ranks THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (2007)
•July 5, 2012 • 1 CommentSo I messed this up a little bit. I wanted to revisit the BOURNE movies in anticipation of the fourth film. Only, I watched them all in one week ending on July 4th, and the next film doesn’t hit theaters until August. Whoops. Oh well. Glad I came back to these movies. This is a solid trilogy.

johnlink ranks BURIED (2010)
•July 4, 2012 • Leave a CommentThis movie is an hour and a half of Ryan Reynolds trapped in a box at the whim of his captor (this is also a standard dream of women all over the world). Played for suspense and terror, this is a one-location flick in the genre of PHONE BOOTH or 127 HOURS. But, unlike those movies, BURIED does not cheat. This really is just an hour and a half where we see nobody but the subject.
johnlink ranks PROMETHEUS (2012)
•July 3, 2012 • 2 CommentsBeen wanting to see PROMETHEUS since I first heard that Ridley Scott was returning to science fiction. I missed it upon its opening weekend as the temperature on this film cooled considerably. Finally managed to get at it on its very last day of release in my theater. Before seeing a second of the movie, I was glad that the hype machine had slowed down a bit. I’d much rather come into a movie with low expectations. SPOILERS BELOW, MASSIVE SPOILERS. For that reason I will say here that this is certainly worth seeing, but don’t read on if you have yet to see PROMETHEUS.
