johnlink ranks UNKNOWN (2011)

I remember seeing the preview for this at some point last year and thinking ‘Well, I knew they were going to make TAKEN clones after the success of that film. I just didn’t think Liam Neeson would stare in the clones, too.’ As it turns out, this film is less derivative of that film than the previews would suggest. Yes Liam Neeson is once again in Europe, searching for a person or persons, and he fights real well. But there are enough differences to allow this film to stand on its own, even if it is tough to avoid comparisons.

johnlink ranks 30 MINUTES OR LESS (2011)

I’m watching more movies this year. No particular conscious effort to do so. Mostly a result of less than intriguing television options, the movie slice of my entertainment pie has gotten larger. I took five days off between SOCIAL NETWORK and 30 MINUTE OR LESS, due to the fact that I was in New Hampshire for a drama festival. So while I took almost a week off from movies, I did see twelve excellent high school plays in two and a half days. Regardless, it was my first five day stretch without seeing a movie since mid-March. Why am I writing all of this? Does it matter? Absolutely not. Let’s talk about a movie…

johnlink ranks THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010)

I’m slowly catching up on some of the films I’ve missed over the last couple of years. THE SOCIAL NETWORK has certainly been a movie I’ve been anticipating for awhile. It seemed odd to me that a film about Facebook might be excellent, save for the fact that Director David Fincher could make a Yoga video excellent.

johnlink ranks PRETTY POISON (1968)

I fell for Tuesday Weld back when I saw her in THE CINCINNATI KID. I haven’t really seen her in anything else, so when this Anthony Perkins/Tuesday Weld movie came across my radar I snagged it. The premise? An ex-con draws a high schooler into his world of fantasy. Sounded unique enough to give it a run!

johnlink ranks MORNING GLORY (2010)

•April 20, 2012 • Leave a Comment

This blog is not littered with too many comedies of this sort. Heck, it’s not littered with many comedies at all, but most of the comedies I’ve written about are more R-Rated fare which often dismisses any sort of reality. MORNING GLORY stars Rachel McAdams, who I love, and Harrison Ford, who I will watch any time. Still, this wasn’t on the top of my list to see, but Liz was really interested, so we put it in.

johnlink ranks UNIVERSAL SOLDIER (1992)

I wasn’t quite ready for bed last night, and wanted to watch something actiony and fun. I stumbled across UNIVERSAL SOLDIER and realized that A) I’ve never seen it before and B) I haven’t looked at a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie anywhere on these pages. Time to remedy both!

johnlink bundles his MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE rankings

I really enjoy the MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE series overall. Except for the second film, all are exciting and fun movies good for some entertainment. Here is a look at where each of them ranked with me.

johnlink ranks TRAITOR (2008)

Yet another espionage thriller with a good cast and decent premise. These things, as can be expected, are more often average than spectacular, but they are usually watchable at the very least. This one has Don Cheadle as a Muslim who may or may not be working for the US Government as he helps some terrorists blow things up around the world.

johnlink ranks SOURCE CODE (2011)

•April 16, 2012 • Leave a Comment

You know me: always up for a good thriller! SOURCE CODE was a movie which supposedly did the science-fiction/suspense genre pretty well. Some decent actors, a decent premise (Jake Gyllenhaal reliving the same eight minutes of a disaster over-and-over until he can solve the mystery), and a fairly high 7.5 score on IMDB. Time to give it a run!

johnlink ranks STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982)

KHAAAAAAAAN!  I’m not sure there is another one-word exclamatory uttering in the history of cinema that I had heard referenced so much without actually seeing the source. Great stuff.  Anyway… here’s the sequel to the decidedly underwhelming first STAR TREK picture. Interestingly, this is actually more of a sequel to a 1967  episode from the original series than it is to the first flick. I really didn’t know anything about STAR TREK II going in (other than, you know, KHAAAAAAAN!). Not to embarrass myself or anything, but I knew so little about this movie that I actually thought Khan was a Klingon. Perhaps my mind made that leap because, well, if you take the ‘ling’ out of Klingon, you get…
