As a young kid, the sandworm from BEETLEJUICE always freaked me the hell out. Because the premise of TREMORS has to do with a bunch of sandworms attacking Kevin Bacon, I kind of avoided this during my formative years before it fell off my radar completely. I happened across it last night, and figured I’d give it a run as I have managed, in my growing wisdom, to conquer my irrational fear of sand worms.
johnlink ranks GET CARTER (2000)
•March 28, 2012 • Leave a CommentI can’t knock Stallone too hard. He’s had some duds, but no more than any other regularly working action star. I really liked his more dramatic turn in COP LAND, and heard GET CARTER mixed some of his more straight action with a character who had a little more depth. This is a movie which had always been on my periphery, but which I had never seen.
johnlink ranks DIRTY WAR (2004)
•March 26, 2012 • Leave a CommentThis is a movie I had never heard of, co produced by HBO and the BBC, which concerns a small nuclear device detonating in the middle of London. The premise hinted at an exciting thriller, so I thought I would give it a go. SPOILERS BELOW, but I’m warning you that you may want them so you don’t waste your time with this movie.
johnlink re-ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PARTS 1 & 2 (2010; 2011)
•March 25, 2012 • 1 CommentBecause this is a re-ranking, I thought it fitting to hit the last two films of the HARRY POTTER series in one article. I’ve addressed them individually here for the first, and here for the second. In this article I will look at them as separate and together, while giving each an individual ranking. I’m glad Liz and I got through the series here in the course of a couple of months. It has been a sickness filled March, and we really needed a couple of nights to shutter ourselves in. HARRY POTTER was not the plan, but it was a somehow fitting way for us to turn into vegetables on the couch and recharge some batteries. What a great series this is!

johnlink ranks ANOTHER 48 HRS. (1990)
•March 22, 2012 • Leave a CommentI watch plenty of series and sequels doing these rankings, but I rarely end up watching them consecutively, for whatever reason. But when it comes to Nick Nolte/Eddie Murphy sort-of action-comedies, I am all in. Even if those films prove to be historically mediocre.
johnlink ranks 48 HRS. (1982)
•March 20, 2012 • Leave a CommentIt may come as a surprise to the youth of America, but Eddie Murphy was not always synonymous with low-grade kiddie flicks, and Nick Nolte used to be more than just a first round pick in the office Celebrity Dead Pool. 1982 found Murphy making his film debut after a star-making run on SNL, and Nolte was considered solid enough to be the headliner of an action flick. I’ve never seen this thing all the way through, so when both it and the sequel showed up on HBOHD, I snagged them on the DVR.
johnlink ranks CEDAR RAPIDS (2011)
•March 14, 2012 • Leave a CommentI have come to be a fan of THE OFFICE’s Ed Helms. I hadn’t really seen any of the show before really liking him in THE HANGOVER. Now that I’ve had a chance to see much of the series, I enjoy him as a comedian. The tone of this little movie seemed to be in line with UP IN THE AIR, which I loved, so this is one I’ve been wanting to see.
johnlink re-ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (2009)
•March 11, 2012 • 1 CommentHere is my first re-ranking of 2012, as I get back to the HARRY POTTER series. When I do the re-ranking, I will read my original review, but I will avoid looking at the scores I gave it. That way I don’t have some sort of urge to try and justify a score, or contradict a score. This was a little harder to do since I watched this sixth HARRY POTTER film way back when I was looking at each category individually. But I managed. I’m not sure why I relate this unimportant, and borderline annoying, minutia. Let’s just get on with the movie…

johnlink ranks NEVER LET ME GO (2010)
•March 9, 2012 • 2 CommentsThis is the sort of film I’m not seeing enough of anymore. Since Quinn was born, usually my movie watching time tends more towards entertainment. That isn’t to say I never watch good films any more, but I find that I seek them out less than I used to. NEVER LET ME GO is not a film I was overly familiar with going in, and my experience was better for it.
johnlink ranks CLASH OF THE TITANS (2010)
•March 5, 2012 • Leave a CommentLiz and I have been sick most of the past week or so, constant coughing and low energy. Sunday night we literally didn’t move from the couch once we put Quinn down, and choosing to watch the CLASH OF THE TITANS remake was one of the laziest movie making decisions we’ve ever made. We just sort of shrugged and pulled it off HBO on demand. It is safe to say that the expectations were not particularly high.
