Some films surprise me when I learn they are 15 years old. Not TWISTER. TWISTER felt 15 years old by 2002. But with all the news about tornadoes in the weather lately, it had been on our minds, so we popped it in. Of course, I’ll watch anything with Cary Elwes, so I didn’t need much of an excuse.
johnlink ranks SPEEDWAY (1929)
•June 1, 2011 • Leave a CommentWhile I’ve seen my share of Keaton and Chaplin, William Haines is one silent era star whom I’d never caught on film. I’d always heard his name in those circles, but hadn’t seen him. Admittedly, watching this film for Haines was a bonus, I DVRd it because it features actual cars, and the actual track, of the Indy 500 way back in 1929. While I’m no racing fan (I’ve never watched an Indy 500), I thought it would be pretty cool to see those cars in a contemporaneous setting.

•May 31, 2011 • Leave a CommentHere’s one of those movie franchises which I often forget exists. I’ve seen them all, though it’s probably been since high school that I’ve seen any of them. I remember very much liking this movie, but for some reason it didn’t stay stuck in my craw like DIE HARD did. But Liz and I were looking for a good mix of action a comedy, and this is where we landed.
johnlink ranks GET HIM TO THE GREEK (2010)
•May 25, 2011 • Leave a CommentI’m not sure why it is I’ve seen so many more comedies than I used to. I think it’s just a need to unwind after long days, and I am tending to lean toward mindlessness. Whatever the reason, I did have interest in seeing this. I’d seen a few moments from it when it was in theaters, and it gave me a good chuckle.

johnlink ranks TOY STORY 2 (1999)
•May 15, 2011 • 2 CommentsI watched TOY STORY back at the end of January in an attempt to review the first two before finally seeing the third. Well, at last I got to the second. Hopefully it won’t take me until September now to get to number three!
johnlink ranks ROBIN HOOD (2010)
•May 14, 2011 • Leave a CommentROBIN HOOD is a project I’ve been tracking since its inception. Since we are talking about a fictional character, it never particularly bothered me that they were re-imagining the origin story. I hoped that Ridley Scott’s take would not take the cute/easy route, and would instead use the chance to reestablish these beloved characters in a unique way. I finally got a chance to catch the film on HBOHD the other day…

•May 9, 2011 • Leave a CommentAny frequenters of Johnston’s Rhode Island Alehouse (or any number of bars in the Rhode Island) knows Oilman Jim. Well, I can honestly say that I would never be reviewing this film if it weren’t for him. I would say that Jim is they guy I talk the most movies with, besides my wife, John R., and my projectionist Brad. Jim insisted I watched this thing, saying it was among his favorite war flicks. He even brought the DVD in for me to borrow. Who was I to say no to that? I was pleased to discover it was a Sam Peckinpah film. Peckinpah is a director I am not familiar enough with, so I was curious to see what this had in store.
johnlink ranks THE MASK OF ZORRO (1998)
•May 2, 2011 • Leave a CommentI don’t think I’ve seen this since it came out in theaters, but there are still some scenes I remember pretty vividly despite it being over a decade since my last viewing. That says something. It might not mean its a classic flick, but it is certainly a fun one!
johnlink ranks FRANKENSTEIN (1931)
•April 20, 2011 • 1 CommentFRANKENSTEIN, from 1931, is an absolute icon of horror. This is the Boris Karloff version: Bolts in neck, arms outstretched, head rolled back. It’s the version which now, 80 years later, is cliche. But I’ve always wanted to see the origin, so I’m very happy to have finally caught this.
johnlink ranks PANDORUM (2009)
•April 19, 2011 • Leave a CommentUpon seeing this film, I can only imagine in the pitch that this was sold as PITCH BLACK meets EVENT HORIZON. Since those are both films I admire enough to pop them in fairly regularly, it makes sense that PANDORUM would keep my attention. All three of the films mentioned thus far have their flaws. The question is: What’s the end result? SOME MINOR SPOILERS BELOW
