After seeing this movie I started thinking of films which try to introduce and establish their own mythology in a single film. I thought of SOUTHLAND TALES and how it never quite lived up to the epic scope it wanted. I thought of the first MATRIX film and how it created its own world. PUSH is somewhere between these two. There is an absolute sense of place and purpose to PUSH, but it’s not quite as cool or groundbreaking a film as the MATRIX. But since I came in to this with very little expectation, I found myself enjoying much more than I thought I would.
johnlink ranks THE BLOB (1958)
•October 21, 2009 • Leave a CommentWith a lot of discussion regarding people’s expectations for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and the theory that it was hyped so much that it could not possibly satisfy audiences, I am happy to report that I had zero expectations going into THE BLOB. In fact, the only reason I gave it a shot at all is because it stars a little known Steve McQueen just two years prior his role in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.

•October 21, 2009 • Leave a CommentSo, ten months later, I finally finished rewatching the SCREAM trilogy. The third one was the one I remembered as being sub-par, and after finding the second to be not as good as I recalled, I was really worried heading into this one. This installment was directed by Wes Craven once again, but the writing was passed from Kevin Williamson to Ehren Kruger.

•October 17, 2009 • 1 CommentI was on my couch with my wife, feeling sick and not wanting to move. We watched an episode of one of our guilty pleasures, GHOST HUNTERS, and decided we wanted to see the similarly themed film PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. We jumped in the car and rushed over, making it just in time for the late showing. We knew very little going in, and this article will be as spoiler free as possible, because that is the best way to see it.

johnlink ranks TRUE ROMANCE (1993)
•October 16, 2009 • Leave a CommentHere is a movie which has been in our queue for awhile. One I’ve seen, but many of my movie night friends have not. I was probably right around 19 or 20 when I last saw this, so there was a small hint of worry that it was not as good of a film as my collegiate mind had remembered it to be. But, it was.

•October 15, 2009 • Leave a CommentWay back in January I had heard that Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven were teaming up for a new SCREAM film. I wanted to revisit the original trilogy, and for no good reason, stopped after the first one. I’ve always remembered the first as a classic, the second as pretty good, and the third as mediocre at best. When I reviewed the first one, I was happy to realize it held up as a commentary on the horror/slasher genre of its time. So now, nine or ten months later, here is number two. SPOILERS BELOW
johnlink ranks GOTHIKA (2003)
•October 14, 2009 • Leave a CommentI’ve seen this once before upon its release, and remember thinking it was an above-average horror movie. Since it came out at the height of Halle Berry’s over-exposure, I was surprised to like it at all. My stance on her has softened a little bit (despite the horrible PERFECT STRANGER), and I was in the mood for something creepy, so I went with Gothika.

•October 7, 2009 • Leave a CommentI’ve seen the remake if this classic Romero title, but never caught the original. I knew going in that it is widely considered one of the premier entries into the zombie genre, and that many think Romero should have stopped with this, his second tale in the Dead series.
johnlink ranks HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES (2003)
•October 6, 2009 • Leave a CommentWhen I made a commitment to watch a good number of horror films this month, I knew that I was going to be watching some low-ranked stuff. I mean, you don’t go into some of these films expecting, consistently, the quality of film of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. So, I watched HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES not expecting much. I got less then I hoped for.

johnlink ranks SURROGATES (2009)
•October 5, 2009 • Leave a CommentWent on a whim over to the theater to check out SURROGATES. I’ll give an Bruce Willis movie a shot, and am generally a fan of sci-fi. I had heard some negative things from people coming out of this one, but wasn’t sure if that was due to the film being over the head of the general film-going audience, as some subversive sci-fi is. Nope. Not this one.
