I’d say that this movie is an example of when comedies used to mean something, but that would be both pretentious and untrue. There is a sense among those critical of today’s comedies that they used to do it so much better. I think comedy is a product of its era. I find comedies of today less funny then the comedies of the 90s. Just as those several years older than me think the 80s were the true era of comedy. When it comes to STRANGELOVE however, I am not so sure that it is merely a product of its time (though it certainly is also that), but that it is quite simply one of the best comedies ever made, in any era, ever.
johnlink ranks DECEPTION (2008)
•July 30, 2009 • Leave a CommentCan’t say that this was a movie I was highly anticipating. I had been wanting to check it out, but had several on the list above it. But, having said that, I’m glad that we did watch it. It’s a solid enough movie, well acted, and well worth a viewing.
johnlink ranks MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE (1996)
•July 30, 2009 • 2 CommentsAfter finally finishing my rankings of the DIE HARD films, I figured I’d start up another series to revisit intermittently. I decided on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE because it is a guilty pleasure which I think I like more than other people do.
johnlink ranks LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (2007)
•July 29, 2009 • Leave a CommentI am a completest. I did the three good DIE HARD reviews over the last couple of months, and have been meaning to get around to watching the unfortunate fourth one. The verdict? Not as bad as I remember in some ways, but worse in others.

johnlink ranks THE SOLOIST (2009)
•July 23, 2009 • Leave a CommentHere is another movie I was upset I missed in theaters. I’m becoming more of a Robert Downey Jr. fan with every movie he does, and it’s nice to see him take dramatic turns amidst some of the big name stuff like IRON MAN and SHERLOCK HOLMES. I also think Jamie Foxx is another actor who has been doing some real solid work over the past several years. This was one I was anticipating.
johnlink ranks BURN AFTER READING (2008)
•July 23, 2009 • Leave a CommentI meant to see BURN AFTER READING in theaters, but never had the opportunity to. I heard much complaining about the end of the film, and some criticism that it was too convoluted. There were also many who liked it, so I went in expecting a lot out of this Coen Brothers movie starring Clooney, Pitt, McDormand, and Malkovich.
johnlink ranks I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER (2009)
•July 20, 2009 • Leave a CommentI say, without hesitation or shame, that I love Hayden Panettiere. My wife knows this, my co-workers know this, I know this. Would I have seen this movie if she wasn’t in it? Maybe not. But I did read the first chapter of the book at Borders one day and it had me laughing. It’s a novel I plan to get to when I have some reading time.

johnlink ranks DEATH AT A FUNERAL (2007)
•July 17, 2009 • Leave a CommentFor the first time in the long, storied history of movie night my mother actually picked a movie. She is the ultimate ‘whatever you guys want to watch’ person, so it was quite the surprise. She had seen the British DEATH AT A FUNERAL on Showtime and wanted to share.
johnlink ranks THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1994)
•July 15, 2009 • 2 CommentsI won’t be shy in saying that THE USUAL SUSPECTS is one of my favorite films ever. It’s always been swirling in the top three with SHAWSHANK and THE PRINCESS BRIDE. But, I hadn’t seen it in awhile and thought I’d pop in my brand new Blu Ray and check it out again. If you have not seen the movie, don’t make the jump below. There are SPOILERS to follow. Just know I recommend it as strongly as I can recommend anything.
johnlink ranks HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (2009)
•July 13, 2009 • 1 CommentOne of the perks of managing a movie theater is that prints need to be screened to assure they are built up properly. Sometimes, if the timing works out, I get to be one of the people making sure their are no errors. And so, I had the opportunity to see the newest HARRY POTTER flick before its official release.
