johnlink ranks THE WRESTLER (2008)

This one might warrant a longer essay at some point. I have to say that it had less wrestling than I expected, but a lot more heart.

I’m someone who grew up watching wrestling. Randy Savage was one of my first heroes as a kid. I stopped regularly watching when the Chris Benoit tragedy occurred. I was extremely jaded, and found it hard to be entertained by guys knowing that odds are they’d probably be dead in ten years.

johnlink ranks MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D (2009)

I’ve been ranking an inordinate amount of horror movies this year. I didn’t think I watched this many. But hey, I guess I do.

I say MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D because I was curious enough about the Dolby 3D in a live action horror film to check it out. That, and when I went into the theater, it was the next thing playing.

johnlink ranks CLOVERFIELD (2008)

So watching Cloverfield on a television is certainly a different experience from watching it on the big screen. I think that the comedy stuff pops a little more (it was funnier than I remember it being), but certainly the scope of the production quality suffers. Ultimately, I found, the story is compelling enough to make it better in your living room than most of its genre.

johnlink ranks SCREAM (1996)

Just heard that a fourth installment of the Scream series is being put together. My initial reaction was that it was a bad idea. I was slightly encouraged to learn that Kevin Williamson is again penning the script, and that Wes Craven will direct. My recollection of the series was that the first one was seriously good, and the second was a serviceable, but not spectacular, sequel. The third was bland and useless. I decided to revisit them to see how I felt now that the third one is almost ten years old. So, here is the first of those reviews.

johnlink ranks NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (1986)

•January 19, 2009 • Leave a Comment

This was a tough one to rank. It’s not easy to look at something like this and compare it to, say, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. I wonder if I’ll regret some of the relatively high scores I gave this when I look at all the numbers at the end of the year. But NIGHT OF THE CREEPS is just a good, fun movie. There is no denying it.

johnlink ranks JUMPER (2008)

The pretentiousness of this movie pisses me off. It’s like the producers thought that if they threw $80 million (or whatever the budget was) at a pile of crap, they could assume it would warrant a sequel. Diane frickin Lane is wasted in, literally, three minutes of screen time only to set up a sequel. Good movies earn their franchise status. JUMPER does not.

johnlink ranks GRAN TORINO (2008)

Halfway through this movie I found myself wondering if I should really be laughing at the racial epithets Clint Eastwood lobs frequently throughout the movie. I did wonder that if his neighbors were African-American, rather than Asian-American, that this film would have been controversial. Even so, I think he gets away with what he says in GRAN TORINO for two reasons…

johnlink ranks KILLER PAD (2008)

I almost didn’t even bother writing about this movie. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen, pushing aside the previous record holder GOING OVERBOARD.

johnlink ranks HITMAN (2007)

Watched HITMAN for the first time today. It was below mediocre, which is way better than I thought it would be. I guess that’s the good thing about low expectations. There is nowhere to go but up!

johnlink ranks STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING (2007)

So here it is… my first virginal ranking of the new year. Starting Out in the Evening is the first movie I’m seeing for the first time in 2009. It was, not coincidentally, the first movie night of 2009. Here’s to many more!
