johnlink ranks ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE (1994)

As a Patriots fan, Ace Ventura holds a bit of nice trivia. Anytime a Dolphin fan gets a little aggressive in their venom towards the Pats, I can always remind them that the last time Miami made it to a Super Bowl was in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

johnlink ranks MR. & MRS. SMITH (2005)

This is one of my guilty pleasure films (and it is the one movie I can guarantee that Jennifer Aniston does not own). I know it’s a summer blockbuster and I should see right through its mindlessness. Only the problem is… I can’t. For fun action/comedy, it rarely gets better than Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

johnlink ranks RED EYE (2005)

My night last night went like this… at midnight I decided to watch a movie. I figured I could watch something up to three hours. After twenty minutes of indecision, I began to think about the ranking system. I decided that I had only watched one movie this year, and that it would be a good time to rekindle the thing. SO I came back and wrote the rankings post, as well as the SILENT HILL post. Then I went back to pick a movie. Now it was more like 1 AM. I figured I could watch a two hour movie. After twenty minutes more of indecision, I decided I needed to find something shorter. I decided to watch RED EYE because it comes in at an economical 85 minutes. Sometimes, this is how decisions are made.

johnlink ranks SILENT HILL (2006)

I saw SILENT HILL on 1.2.09. Sort of wish it wasn’t the first movie I do up with my ranking system this year. I feel like I like this movie lots more than most, so my numbers might seem off to some.

New Movie Project

So I started the Movie-a-week plan. That lasted two weeks. It’s not that I lost interest. I should still make a coherent essay on my hatred for the DiCaprio ‘Romeo & Juliet” (the directorial choices, not the acting. Most of the acting was okay).

I will still post longer critiques of movies as I go, but I am going to try something which will certainly increase my blogging footprint (just what the world needs… another blogger, woohoo).

GROSSE POINTE BLANK (1997; no ranking)

•November 10, 2008 • 1 Comment

There is a moment in “Grosse Pointe Blank” when guns are being fired in the direction of a
promotional standee for “Pulp Fiction”, and the head of Bruce Willis is shot off. The moment isn’t given an in-your-face focus, but rather is in the background of a violent shootout. The messages in “Grosse Pointe Blank” are made this way. The movie is a fun comedy with plenty of absurdity and violence to go around, but it makes its points along the way.

OUT OF SIGHT (1998; no ranking)

There’s a pantheon of ‘cool’ movies made in the 1990s. Tarantino, of course, springs instantly to mind with ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’. Then you have ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘The Big Lebowski’. The era (at least the 90’s era) probably ended with ‘Fight Club.’
