Ryan Reynolds is on a fairly solid career trajectory, doing more good stuff than bad stuff. Denzel Washington, of course, is a star. This was a somewhat interesting pairing, with Denzel being placed in the role of bad guy. I like the choice, even if I prefer his more heroic roles than his more villainous turns.
johnlink ranks TARZAN (1999)
•December 16, 2012 • Leave a CommentTARZAN is one of the handful of hand-drawn animated films which sprung up in the era just following a Golden Age of such films which provided BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, and LION KING. By June of 1999, when TARZAN was released, we had already been privy to a TOY STORY movie (with the sequel on the way in November) and A BUG’S LIFE. The Pixar era had unquestionably begun, and it wasn’t about to go away. I’d never seen TARZAN, though it had been sitting on my shelf for close to a decade. I’m not sure why last night was its night, but I suppose it was due.
johnlink ranks THE TERMINATOR (1984)
•December 13, 2012 • Leave a CommentI gave myself the goal of getting through multiple series this calendar year. We’ll see if I gave myself enough time to rifle through all of the TERMINATOR universe. I’ve always regarded this as great science fiction, but it has been awhile since I’ve put it on.
johnlink ranks MACHETE (2010)
•December 7, 2012 • Leave a CommentBy looking over trends in movie titles as you run down the page, you can tell when life gets hectic. Not only do I not get to watch a movie for four or five days, but the titles which do appear tend to weigh much more on the entertaining side of the scale rather than the heavy dramatic side. Regardless, MACHETE is a movie which I had some interest in, much the same way I had interest in EXPENDABLES: Good cast, looked like fun, harmless entertainment.
johnlink ranks LEGION (2009)
•December 3, 2012 • 3 CommentsThis is a film which has been on the waiting list for a while. My brothers saw this awhile back and informed me that I needed to see it because it was just so awful. It wasn’t, according to them, so-bad-it’s-good awful. Just awful. Needless to say, my expectations were very low going in, which is an easy way for a movie to be better than expected. So how was it?

•November 30, 2012 • Leave a CommentWe moved within town this week, and that led to my longest movie layoff of the year. Fortunately, my RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK review was posted over at headinavice.com, so I at least kept myself engaged in some movie conversations. Anyway, we got the TV, Blu Ray, and surround sound set up. I wanted to test it out with a movie which I knew looked and sounded good.

johnlink ranks HODEJEGERNE (HEADHUNTERS) (2011)
•November 23, 2012 • Leave a CommentHEADHUNTERS is a Norwegian film about an arrogant corporate recruiter with a Napoleon complex who moonlights as an art thief. A thriller which, itself, also moonlights as a gory action film, this is certainly not an American movie in its presentation. And you know what? That’s a good thing!

johnlink ranks TWO AGAINST THE WORLD (1932)
•November 17, 2012 • Leave a CommentApparently Constance Bennett was a name in 1932. Perhaps I am a poor film scholar, but I had no idea who she was before seeing this film. TWO AGAINST THE WORLD is a little movie about budding love and murder, and how those two things can get in each other’s way.

johnlink ranks THE EXPENDABLES (2010)
•November 17, 2012 • Leave a CommentBefore last night, I had never seen an EXPENDABLES movie. I was not avoiding them on principle, to be sure. Indeed, I’m a fan of enough of these guys to have been intrigued. I just never found my way to it. Until last night. I wasn’t looking for much out of an EXPENDABLES film. I just wanted to have some fun.
