johnlink ranks FOOD,INC. (2008)

Could this be? Over a year and a half into my ranking project and I am finally putting up my first documentary? That’s embarrassing, just as embarrassing as it was to take until June of this year to finally watch a silent film. But hey, better late than never…

johnlink ranks DARK PASSAGE (1947)

I woke up this morning with a severely pulled muscle in my neck. I figured it was a good excuse to sit on the couch and catch and old Bogart/Bacall movie. I’ve owned this for awhile, and been meaning to see it. I’m currently reading Rose Madder by Stephen King, which is another book with ties to the Dark Tower saga, and King quotes a passage from the Dark Passage novel. Since reading that, I’ve been looking for an excuse to finally see this film.

johnlink ranks BODY OF LIES (2008)

I’ve really gotten my money’s worth out of HBOHD this summer. I’ve caught up on several releases from the past couple years that I missed in theaters. Last night, I finally saw Ridley Scott’s war-in-the-middle-east flick BODY OF LIES.

johnlink ranks FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956)

I had seen this once before in for a Sci-Fi film class. I saw so much stuff from the 50s in those three months that I wouldn’t have been able to tell you much except that I remembered the father-daughter relationship, Robby the Robot, and I could vaguely recall the monster trying to attack the ship. So when the movie came across TCM last week, I figured I’d throw it on the DVR and get back to it, because I remember it being good if nothing else.

I love Ricky Gervais unabashedly. I can’t believe it took me this long to see this movie. I didn’t know of the cameo explosion this film has to offer. Some Spoilers below. But this is a comedy, so I’m not exactly ruining THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

johnlink ranks HOLLOW MAN II (2006)

Yep. I really watched HOLLOW MAN II. What’s funny, is I think the first one is bad enough. But FearNetHD came calling for the first time in a long while, and there we were, late at night, watching a straight to DVD ‘horror’ film. What the heck, the world wouldn’t be the same without the low men on the totem pole, right?

johnlink ranks THE NIGHT LISTENER (2006)

When I put this movie in last night I was under the impression that I had never seen it before. After the first scene, I thought I must have seen the trailer. After the second, I thought maybe I fell asleep after putting it in. About ten minutes in, I realized I had seen it, that I could recall moments, but I couldn’t remember it all. It was like trying to dig deep in order to piece together a fading dream. This wouldn’t be alarming if this movie had come out in 1986, but this thing is only 4 years old. I’ve never done that before. I’m supposed to know my movies better than that. It must mean the movie is terrible, right?

johnlink ranks THE LION KING (1994)

We were in the mood for an old standby. For my wife and I, THE LION KING is certainly that. It is a movie whose dialogue we both know verbatim, and many of whose songs and lines enter daily life. Of all the films I love from the 90s, THE LION KING is one of a couple handfuls which I feel will endure as all time classics.

I’m always up for some Samuel L. Jackson. Especially when he plays a cop. I like the parts where he raises his voice slowly, pauses, then keeps going, until… He’s… YELLING! Kidding aside, this seemed like a decent thriller ripe with some social context layered in with the standard cheap thrills.

johnlink ranks THE FINAL DESTINATION (2009)

•August 2, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Mind you, this is not the first in the series entitled FINAL DESTINATION. This is the fourth. Apparently, in stupid movie translation, ‘THE’ is dumbassian for ‘4’. I’m not sure why I watched this. I knew it was a bad idea when I started it, and by the end I was mad at myself for not just going to bed. In fact, my wife turned to me and said “Why did I bother to stay up for that?” I didn’t have a good answer.
